3) Firewalls

A firewall is software or hardware that acts like a gate to help protect your computer against hackers and some computer viruses and worms that try to find unprotected computers that are connected to the Internet. This gate allows you to you to accept connections from sources you trust, and it keeps the gate closed for ones you don't trust. A firewall works by examining information coming from and going to the Internet. It identifies and blocks information that comes from a dangerous location or seems suspicious. If you set up your firewall properly, hackers searching for vulnerable computers cannot detect your computer (often referred to as a stealthed connection).

There are two kinds of firewalls:
Hardware Firewall - normally built into a router if you use one. If you do have a router with a firewall, make sure you enable it. And also password protect your router, especially if it is a wireless router. Wireless routers can be less secure because they use radio frequencies to communicate with your PC. So if you use a wireless router, you can help enhance the security of your network by enabling the firewall and by requiring a password to connect to your network. Make sure you also enable encryption on your wireless network.
Software Firewall - special software that you must install. Use a software firewall even if you do have a hardware firewall. But only use one software firewall. Running multiple software firewalls is unnecessary and using more than one software firewall on the same connection could cause issues with connectivity to the Internet or other unexpected behavior.

Tip # 97 WinCleaner One Click

Is this one of the most useful programs ever written? USD$30 Shareware.

Not only does it find and delete WinJunk and Shortcuts, but also has WinReg Cleaner, Win Net Cleaner, WinPrivacy Cleaner and WinUninstall Wizard.
It also has the option of WinCleaner One Click (doh), where it gets its name from

Perhaps the most important feature, and one that is downplayed, is WinSmart Mover.

This allows you to shift programs from one Folder to another, OR from one drive to another without having to re-install. YES, it does find and shift your REGISTRY entries, as required.

I tried shifting a program frm my c:\ drive to my t:\drive (external) and back again and it still worked. :cool
It occasionally finds a Registry entry it says it can't move but that didn't appear to make any difference to the operation of the program.

I tried to shift my Acronis True Imace v11 backup program from one Folder to another but it said I had processes in operation, and would not shift it.
I could not find what was causing this so you may have to uninstall and reinstall some programs in your usual manner.

I did shift other programs without problems. It has a 30 day free trial for you to check it out.
NB: It appears slow to start as it searches your Registry for entries. The green progress search bar does not move for a while but it will.
Be patient.Then you click on "move Folder" and you're done.

Well I'm back. Thanks to Cyclone Charlotte and huge amounts of rain over the last 2 weeks, my landline got all soggy and refused to work for the best part of a week. :cry It has just been fixed and here I am again. :cool

For those who don't understand mm (millimetres) in rainfall. 25.4 mm = 1 inch
