Kaspersky Lab found a new variant of Gpcode, a dangerous encryptor virus has appeared, - Virus.Win32.Gpcode.ak. Gpcode.ak encrypts files with various extensions including, but not limited, to .doc, .txt, .pdf, .xls, .jpg, .png, .cpp, .h and more using an RSA encryption algorithm with a 1024-bit key.

Kaspersky Lab succeeded in thwarting previous variants of Gpcode when Kaspersky virus analysts were able to crack the private key after in-depth cryptographic analysis. Their researchers have to date been able to crack keys up to 660 bits. This was the result of a detailed analysis of the RSA algorithm implementation. It has been estimated that if the encryption algorithm is implemented correctly, it would take 1 PC with a 2.2 Ghz processor around 30 years to crack a 660-bit key.

The author of Gpcode has taken two years to improve the virus: the previous errors have been fixed and the key has been lengthened to 1024 bits instead of 660...

The program will install and set it to run every 30 min via the windows task scheduler. Cleanmem works in a matter of about 5 sec. It uses a windows api call that is in Windows 2000,xp,2003,Vista & 2008 that tells windows to cleanup the workspace of a processes thus freeing up any memory the process no longer needs. Other memory cleaners end up forcing the memory into the page file slowing down your system. This tool does not. The API call frees up unused memory from programs, when a program needs the memory again it can simply take it back instead of forcing the memory out of ram and into the page file.

A good example is this, say you have Quickbooks installed and setup for multi user mode. The Quickbooks service takes 37mb of memory just sitting there! when cleanmem is ran it uses only 600kb and wont grow again until it actually is used. The same goes for all processes. Rating: 4.88 (9 votes).

Bazza's note. Excellent rating by MG members. But I can't see the point of only cleaning RAM every 30 minutes though. I haven't used it but would have thought there should be option to change the 30 minutes to, say, every 15 minutes.

Thanks, dnnyo. We were all "privates" at some time. I joined in 2004, for the downloads, but never thought I could / would contribute much. This monthly column was started to encourage the "lurkers" to join MG. A new column is started each month as it is easier that way, but it is not really suitable for a "sticky".
