FrontPage 98

About a month ago my computer was invaded by a major virus. I took my tower to a computer expert here in Asheville, NC and he said that the hard drive was so corrupted that the best thing to do would be to start over by cleaning out the hard drive altogether and reinstall Windows 98 (my former operating system) and all of the other programs that I use. This meant, of course, that I literally lost everything.

When my tower was returned I proceeded to reinstall the programs, including FrontPage 98.
I also installed Norton Internet Security 2004 so that the same mess wouldn't happen again.

Now for the problem. I opened FrontPage 98 with the intention of downloading my Web site pages back into my computer. I had done this once before a couple of years ago and it was very successful. However, this time when I open FrontPage, the first thing I see is a window that says "NIS Control Program, Low Risk, Web page building program is attempting to access the internet. Permit recommended." So, I click "OK". Moving further into the program I receive this message "FrontPage has found that your hostname is e4y0k1." I have NEVER seen this name before. The location of my web page is listed as http://e4y0k1/myweb (The address produces a "Page cannot be displayed" notice.) The TRUE address of my web page is http://www.noahsart.com But if I try to utilize the option of changing the listed web address to my true address, the OK button is NOT functional. Any attempt to further access the FrontPage program prompts the following note: "There is no server on port 80 at e4y0k1" and I am stalled completely. When I clicked on START>FIND>Port 80, I discovered that Symantic has numerous listings on that port, among other items. I have even disabled all of Norton Internet Security thinking that it might be causing the problem. But with NIS disabled the same problem exists.

    Do you have any suggestion?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Do you have any firewall software other than norton or the built-in windows one?

    Firewall

No, the only fire wall that I have is part of Norton Internet Security 2004.

did you install the pws (personal webserver) ? the "e4y0k1" is the name of YOUR computer in which FP98 think's it's trying to connect to.

No, I did not personally install the Personal Web Server....I believe that FrontPage 98 installs one...yes? But the "name" of MY computer is new to me....I've never seen it before. Where did it come from and how can I change it to allow me to access the FP98 program? I thought that each computer has an IP address consisting of four numbers separated by periods. Are the "name" of the computer and the IP address two different things? I am truly stumped.

I don't recall if FP98 installs the PWS, though I might make a suggestion. If you're into building websites, I would highly recommend moving to Windows 2000 or Windows XP PROFESSIONAL as it has a built in webserver that you can install that works a lot better than PWS.

The name of the pc is generated during the installation process of the operating system and is NOT the same thing as the IP. Think of the IP address as your home address on the internet.

    Thanks, again, Kodo

I greatly appreciate your advice. However, I am a minor player in the computer world and constantly upgrading is just too expensive and I really don't need all of the new bells and whistles. For example, my trusty old HP scanner (ScanJet 4C, a 8.5 X 14 format which I use for my web site) will have to be replaced if I move to WIN XP. Then FrontPage 98, no longer supported by Microsoft, would have to be upgraded and on and on.

My dilemma is that everything functioned (WIN 98, FrontPage 98, WordPerfect 98, HP scanner) BEFORE the computer was cleaned out and WIN 98 reinstalled. It just doesn't make sense to me as to why there are problems with all of them upon reinstallation. (WordPerfect 98 won't install at all!) The most important one at the moment is getting FrontPage 98 back up and running but I can't even access it because of the new name ("e4y0k1") given to my computer and the fact that "there is no server on port 80 at e4y0k1". I just don't know how to activitate the port or to change the name or.....? Microsoft no longer supports FrontPage 98 so I've hit a dead end there.

    Thanks again for your help.

I would make sure PWS is installed. If it can't access a site on port 80 then chances are PWS is not installed or the pws is turned off.
start there and see if it is infact installed.

I would also encourage you to take up programming without using FP98, you can do so much more. :)

    FP 98

    Kodo,
I have a PWS icon on the lower tool bar. I opened the "properties" option and found the following:
    Default Home Page: C:\WebShare\wwwroot\Default.htm
    HTTP://e4y0k1

On the "startup" tab, I found:
Run the Web server automatically at statup.
    Web Server is running

On the "services" tab, I found:
    FTP Status: Stopped Startup: Manual
    HTTP " Running " Automatic

Are there clues in this information?

turn on the FTP. FP98 uses FTP to upload files to the webspace on your pc.

I found the culprit! I you are looking for a nightmare just install Norton Internet Security. It caused more problems than I care to think about! Disabling the program did not remedy the problems. The program had to be completely removed before FrontPage, WordPerfect, PhotoShop Elements and my HP scanner were bug free. What a mess!

Thanks for your help in the meantime.
