Froyo to Gingerbread

I have the Samsung Infuse from AT&T. It runs Froyo. I would like to somehow upgrade it to Gingerbread. AT&T has not officially released Gingerbread for the Infuse yet. Supposedly a Canadian version were released with it, so I know that the device is capable of running it. I know that in order to run Gingerbread on my phone, I will need to root it. That, however, is the limit of my knowledge on what to do. Does anyone know how I can do this and be able to explain it to someone with a somewhat moderate level of tech savvy?

 

I have never done it personally but I know people who have rooted and installed custom roms/kernels on phones. You will need to look on specialist phone sites where you should get a guide. Be warned that you can do irreparable damage to your phone and you will invalidate any warrenty that you have. So do not do this lightly.

And please be aware that rooting your phone is a bit like jailbreaking an iPhone.. not something that carriers look favorably on, and it can come back to bite you badly. In your csae, if you have your contract with AT&T and they have not released Gingerbread for your phone yet, you might not be able to use all or parts of their service if you upgrade. If they have plans to give you the update soon, you might as well wait. T-Mobile and Verizon have rolled it out on their phones already.
