When my computer starts, and I am taken to the Windows XP log in screen; my machine freezes right after I put my password in and hit enter. The screen doesn't move from where it says....."applying your personal settings". I tried to restart the computer in safe mode (F8), but it says keyboard failure and 90% of the time it skips over that boot page. When it does go to the boot page, i can't scroll up to choose safe mode. It just starts windows normally after the 30 second timer is done. Then again, it freezes just after I put in my log in password. Whats the deal??

ipoked around on a few other forms for info and have found the pc is hanging Possibly due to an out of date or missing driver for the keyboard or mouse(sneaky) or just simply a bad kboard or did you perhaps add a new kb or mouse(missing drivers)or broken

Windows automatically halts the pc when it detects an error at start up some of these are changeable in the bios(different for each manufacture)

I actually asked that question, my acct. was not active at that time. So if the keyboard is the problem, why would it let me type in my password on the log is screen? I could see why it would not let me switch between boot options. Should I plug my old keyboard and mouse back in, and disconnect the wireless ones i have now?

petalumacacraigslist is right about this. I saw an identical situation to this just last month. The user replaced the keyboard and the problem was fixed.
I don't mean to say that is your computer's problem, only that it could be.
