Frustrated......

:wave hi all .......i'm a newbie in need of some help. I can't really afford to take my daughters computer in to be fixed, so I thought I would see if someone here could possibly assist me in resolving a problem. My daughter has a dell laptop, inspiron 500m it runs xp pro. She had it loaded with trojans and virus's so I tried to reinstall the operating system and now all her drivers are basically missing. I went to the dell site to download them but her computer won't complete installation. Am I missing something? I could sure use some help......as she would like to be able to use her computer for school.

 

Welcome to MajorGeeks! I have a Dell 600m, and have installed XP many times! Where are you downloading the drivers from exactly?

If you have the service tag # you can get the exact ones you need for your computer. If you don't, you can try trial and error, or maybe install SIW and get the info on what is in the box... http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4387.html

Install the chipset driver first, then get the network. Then you can use the laptop to go to Dell's site and snag the rest of the drivers.

Are you getting any error messages when you try to install the drivers?

hi there, well i thought if i went right to the dell site that would be the best place but they show errors when i install them and they wont complete

 

oh yes ..... be gentle with me i'm not that savy with computers lol but i can usually get by. I have no idea what a chipset driver is tho....... thank you for the nice welcome and the advice. I do appreciate it.

 

Chipset driver is in the link above. There is only one driver for that, so we should be good to go. Download the driver in the pict below and burn it on a CD, then install it from the CD to the laptop.

Post any errors or problems you have.

ty so much, i was able to install the chipset. but there are so many network drivers i'm not sure which i need or do i need them all?

 

No, you only need the one your 'puter has. Do you have the service tag number for the laptop?

i'm so sorry you are dealing with me lol. I ran the tag number but there were so many network downloads ......not sure which i need or where to look...they were all listed under the tag

 

If you do not have the service tag number, download SIW (in post #2), burn it on a CD and install it on the laptop. Run the program, and look for hardware, and network card. Click on that and see if it gives you any info that matches the network drivers on Dell's site.

If you have any problems, or questions, ask.

Just saw your post, download the SIW and run it on the laptop.

ok, i'm back. I couldn't fix my first problem but maybe someone can help me with this one. how do you make the black picture frame around a burnt dvd movie dissapear. I selected the right setting for widescreen, but only the menu screen displays as widescreen. I'm tired of looking at very tall thin people on my tv screen. lol
