Frying Tonight - Exploding PSU

Well, it says "Smart Power" but from this power supply at least, there isn't any power anymore. It's not in the computer anymore either. In fact, it smells so bad I had to leave it outside. And it blew the fuse in the mains lead.

Luckily the computer it was in only cost £7.50, so it's not the end of the world. I thought the PSU might be faulty because the on/off switch was acting oddly. And then it went bang. There was a bright flash of light and a fair bit of smoke. I took it out of the computer and removed the cover to see what had happened to it. It looks like the top blew off one of the big capacitors or whatever they are.

What's the betting it's cooked the CPU and RAM as well ?

 

UPDATE - Well it looks like I got away with it. I replaced the power supply, cleared the password protection on the cmos, installed XP and it's working fine.

 

Glad it did not kill anything else in your box! What is the brand and model of the offending PSU so I will know what not to buy?

The psu says Antec on it, but seeing as I didn't buy it new, and have no idea how it was previously treated or how old it was, I'm not too worried about it. It's the first time I've had a computer that's gone bang. It's an HP Pavilion t430.uk, but from the marks on the side of the case, it looks like someone's lost their temper with it at some time or other. It's got deep scratches as if it's been slid along on concrete.
If it carries on working I might put some more ram into it and use it for the internet, it's got to be better than this intel p4, 1.6 box of nastiness I've been using for the last few months.
