    HI all

I am just starting to get into overclocking and I have studied the overclock guide which I have to say was a mega help.

I have a question though which I hope someone can help with

    CPU - Intel P4 630 3.0Ghz 800FSB
    RAM - DDR2 PC5300 - DDR667
    My Mobo supports overclocking

My Intel has quad pumping so 800FSb has a real clock of 200Mhz
My RAM has dual pumping and therefore has a real clock of 333MHz

Does this mean that my RAM is running at a real clock of 200Mhz with a dual pump taking it up to 400 or does the example I gave above allow for the Ram to run at 333Mhz dualed to 667 as even though the CPU has a real clock of 200Mhz it is quad pumped giving it an effective clock of 800 which is above the 667 of the Ram?

    Thanks in advance

load CPU-z and find out... it will tell you

Thats it have a look with CPU-z under the Memory tab. You may find you have a FSB: DRAM ratio of 4:5 and that your RAM is running faster than your CPU but this will give you more room for OC!

    Thanks for your responses guys

I have loaded up CPU-Z and to my horror !! My RAM frequency is 166.7Mhz which I assume is doubled up to 333Mhz

My FSB:Dram ratio is 6:5 (strange)

I have also gone into the BIOS and it say my RAM is set to run at 667.

As you can see the effective 333Mhz that I am getting now way off the 667 mark I expected !

    Any ideas ?

Alright I think you better cross-refrence these values download EVEREST Home (free):

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181

Expand Motherboard > SPD, whats it saying for Memory Speed?

Also some BIOS will allow you to set the FSB: DRAM ratio, see if you can find this, "Advanced Chipset Features" and change to 1:1

    Thanks again for the response

I have downloaded Everest and it says DDR2-667 (333Mhz) in the Mobo/SPD section.

My MOBO BIOS doesnt have the option to change FSB:DRAM ratio.

What do you think about this article I read http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=702&redirect=yes

Look at the explaination of DDR2 it says that a 100MHz of DDR2 actually equates to 400MHz - this would explain why CPU-z is saying my actual speed is 166.7MHZ as 166.7MHz * 4 = 666.8

Also something else - My MOBO supports DUAL Ram - when I put the modules into DUAL mode my FSB:DRAM ratio changes to 16:13.

    I take it this means 13/16*100 = 81.25%

My RAM is running at 81.25% of the FSB of the CPU

    Therefore

    800(CPU FSB)/100=8*81.25=650Mhz

Please note I had to downclock my RAM to 650Mhz in the BIOS as for some reason in DUAL mode it crashes at 667Mhz

I appreciate I have rambled on a bit here but I would appreicate your thoughts.

    Thanks in advance

That looks very solid to me! It seems you have self resolved the issue and the maths is spot on;) . The link certainly explains a lot. Tell you what I have a "Performance" mode in my BIOS and this causes the system to become very unstabile, go figure?

Yeah I reckon I have craked the problem there

Cheers for all the help you gave me.
