    Hi Guys,

I am looking for a good ftp server software add on. Does anyone know of one to recommend? Is there such a thing of one that does not need to have port forwarding turned on and configured? Any help would be Appreciated.

    Thanks

    Eric

What operating system are you using? As for port forwarding, it is required if you are accessing this FTP server from the internet, and the machine is behind a NAT-enabled router.

I have not built the machine yet it will be either xp pro or server 2003.
I want to give my customers the ability to backup there files and retrieve them from there office or home or anywhere. I do not see ftp being a good solution. do you have any recommendations? thanks

Windows machines have IIS, which has an FTP server component.

What are your reservations about FTP?

    Security?
    User-friendliness?
    Ease of administration?

There are alternatives such as WebDav, as well as SFTP.

I need something so my clients go be anywhere and just jump on a web browser and access there files. If port forwarding has to be configured on a router from a hotel room I do not see that working. thanks everyone!

Port forwarding is done only on the SERVER end. So that connections from the outside world can make it past your router to the right computer. Your clients wouldn't have to do it. One time only change so long as the FTP server has a static private IP.

A FTP site sounds like it would meet your requirements.

its a one time change for each location a client tries to hit my ftp server is it not? thanks

No. This is done on YOUR router, just once (again, assuming the FTP servers PRIVATE IP doesn't change), regardless of where clients are connecting from.

Maybe this link will explain port forwarding to you better than I have.
