I was wondering if I could get some insight. I own an XFX Geforce 6800 128MB AGP video card. Whenever I attempt to play video in any program it distorts the image. It looks like every few millimeters the video is not lined up horizantaly. So it all looks jagged. I send the card into the manufacturer and they reaplced with brand new one, same problem. I am running the latest WHQL certified drivers from Nvidia. Also, I have a Geforce 3 Ti200 and a Geforce FX 5200 and put those in and the problem went away. Both using the exact same drivers (obviously) as the 6800. Anyone have insight to my complex problem? Thanks!!

Very quick update, sorry i forgot to include this info when I posted---

-The problem occurs only in FULLSCREEN
    -Running WinXP Pro SP1
-Problem occurs on ALL resolutions and refresh rates
-Problem does NOT occur on fullscreen games, only Fullscreen video when played in an app, (i.e. Windows Media Player, Winamp, WinTV, etc...)

Let me know if you need more intel! Thanks!

Have you played with the refresh rates on your monitor? I had a prob with Rage Fury Maxx a couple of years back, games were fine, but fullscreen Winamp visualizations would crash the whole system. I have an Asus A7V w/4x AGP w/fastwrite capabilities. Vodoo and Nvidia cards worked fine w/ all apps. I switched my refresh rate for monitor from 60 to 50 mhz and problem sent away. Not sure if same issue, but maybe worth a try. BTW, I have had issues w/video and Win XP, because XP shares the video channel w/ other things, so now I have a dual boot system w/Win 98, which has a dedicated video channel and all is fine. Just some input, don't know if it applies to your particular problem, but maybe give you some ideas.

right click the desktop and choose properties. Under the settings tab click advanced.

Then choose the troubleshooting tab, uncheck the box 'enable write combining' see if that solves the problem?

if not, try progressively turning down hardware acceleration, if any setting solves the problem it could help us to find a lasting sollution.

Here is the update. Changing refresh rates does not help at all. Neither did the write combining checkbox. But what DID get rid of the problem was when I scaled the hardware acceleration down to the 3rd from the least amount of acceleration. The one with the decription "Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations, as well as....". Hopefully this helps in the diagnosis? Thanks a bunch everyone!

Have you reformatted the HD and reinstalled win at all during the changes is gfx cards?have you updated to dx9.0c?Does your comp pass all the dx tests?
I would try removing direct x and installing a fresh copy if not-directx can be removed using directx erradicator

what resolution are you running your monitor? if you are using 1280x1024 (which is what I would guess) then its a problem of aspect ratios.

1280x1024 is 5:6 ratio, not the traditional 4:3 ratio that standard TV's and Monitors run at (1024x768, 1280x960) ans so forth. Certain cards will mess with the video when trying to adjust for the aspect ratio.

try looking in the driver settings (dont have mine in front of me.. so bear with me) and try to find the monitor resolution or scaling settings. try fixed ratio, or 'monitor scaling' and see if either of those make a difference.

    I don't mean to be a stickler ... but 1280x1024 is a 5:4 ratio :p .. otherwise you are correct

haha my mistake, I must have missed that when typing... touche salesman ;)

I'm totally convinced that when they made monitor standards .. they were like 'ok, we got 4:3 and 16:9, those are practical and useful ... but they just aren't confusing enough' ... so one guy piped up 'how about we create a 1280x1024 res which is a 5:4 ratio and we'll make it the default resolution for 80% of monitors, yet incompatible with nearly *all* formats of media' 'brilliant':D

Alright, I solved the problem, thought I would share it with you all. It had nothing to do with the aspect ratio or my resolution (1600x1200..which BTW looks PERty on my 21" LCD Samsung  ). I had been running Nvidia Detonator drivers release 66.93 which is the most current WHQL certed drivers they have to offer. After banging my head into a wall for days on this with all of your help (for which I am VERY greatful for the insight) I hunted through Nvidia's website for different drivers. I tried some retro drivers all the way back to release 40's....nothing worked. I saw that they had 71.84 driver available for BETA. Now I am not a huge fan of beta drivers, espicially Nvidia (WHQL are buggy as it is). But I bit the bullet and tried it....CURED EVERYTHING. Just to make sure I retroed my drivers back to the old ones, problem came back. I am f'ing stoked that it works now, I just want to know WHY!!!! Thank you for all the input guys.

I don't know why ... but you might want to take a look at the read me file(or which ever tells you the what was changed) and see what was changed between your drivers that worked and the ones that didn't

the only thing to be wary about with those beta drivers are the reported temperature. It's known that the temperature will read about 10 degrees higher at any given time with the 7xxx series drives than with the 6xxx series. why? who knows.
