I don't know why this info seems so hard to come by but I am going to change over my old Vista 32 HD to a new 1 T HD. I want to install 7 clean on that new drive and use my old as a storage volume.
My old HD was upgraded using a Vista upgrade disk.
If I buy a Windows 7 Home premium upgrade disk 64 bit will I just be able to insert the old Vista upgrade disk to prove eligabilty like you could do when installing and upgrade version of XP?
I hope I don't need to buy the full version when I have already paid for the Vista upgrade.

I hope I made my question clear.

Why not just clone your old hard drive over to the new one? I believe all the hard drive manufacturers have software to do this; visit their website ti download it. I know Western Digital has it; look for their Data Lifeguard Tools.

    Couple of things.

I believe in clean installs not in place upgrades number 1. I am going from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit 7 number two. Number three I am going from a Samsung to a Seagate though I don't know if that matters.
I addition I get a weird error message about the MFT not being correct when I try to run spinrite so I just want to start clean.
In earlier versions you could do a clean install with a upgrade disk if you had a qualifying version of an earlier windows product. You could just insert in into the DVD rom drive when prompted and it would see the qualifying disk and then you could take it out and place your new disk back in the drive and complete the installation.
That is what I would like to do here if that is still possible.

So, your old computer originally had Windows XP? Did it come with a Windows CD or did the computer have a recovery partition with Win XP on it? If so, did you ever create a recovery disc from the recovery partition?

I know at one time, Microsoft upgrades depended upon if you had the previous version on disk. During the installation of the new OS, it would ask you to insert the old version into the disk drive to verify that you had the previous version.

Is this still the case? It's been awhile since I did any upgrades when a new HD was installed before the installation took place.

Thanks Halo, that answered my question. MS must have changed a few things since people were probably taking advantage of that "feature" years ago.

Oh and while I'm at it, one thing in migrating to Windows 7 you can use in XP or Vista is the Easy Transfer Tool and that will backup all accounts settings etc for import into Windows 7, only thing it wont do is to backup your applications, you will need to install them again. I used the WET tool when moving my main Vista x64 PC to Windows 7 x64 and it worked a treat.

Had an origianal DVD I installed full version of XP Home 32 bit (Now Lost) and upgraded with a Vista 32 upgrade disk (still have).
I just want to do a clean install on a new drive with an upgrade version of & Home premium 64.
Can I just insert the old Vista 32 upgrade disk when asked for a qualifying disk? Or will it ask at all?

Erm, read this from Windows Secrets as a clean install is always the best though more laborious. You can't get something for nothing, right?;)
