take a breather from the heady world of solving browser-hijackers. Help me with this.

I have a huge family and a HUGE family reunion upcoming. I am the fledgling [at age 50 ] genealogist in the clan cause no one else wants to work so hard on it. I have had a bigtime scanner for scanning ancient photos. I know the photos can be digitally touched up to solve missing pixel/pieces.

QUESTION: WHAT is the best package to use for easy touchup of these JPG images? I have tried Arcsoft PhotoStudio 20000 [impossible to use] and Infraview so far. I can tell this is one of those murky dark holes that will take months to sort out. HELP me

My advice would be to pick one program and stick with it. If it's freeware like Infraview, look for good online tutorials and advice.

OR. Since you are working with something this important and special to a large family with many, many photos that need to be restored and saved. Buy a good program where you get a manual that outlines the basics and probably the instructions you will need or require.

Photoshop Elements and Album is good. I use it for work, mostly to enhance and archive photos of fish and mussels. It's fairly easy to use and loaded with features, just have to play around with it. PaintShop Pro is another good option that offers a photo album and everything else.

I really do think the best thing you could do is pick one program that will do what you want and stick with it.

Do any of the younger folks in the family like computers? Young people are great with computers, they are not afraid to experiment and try things that you or I might hesitate about. Get one or two of them involved, it might surprise you how much help they could be and it is a family project.

Good luck on a very special endeavor. ;)

It really depends on how much editing you need to do -I would suspect that you don't have to heavily manipulate the photos: as such a basic proggie like Infraview or Picasa2 would do.
I personally like Picasa2 for basic editing (ie: no fancy stuff/easy to use).

I use The Gimp, it does it's job. From my point of view the skills acquired, (such as they are;) ), are transferrable between Windows and Linux.

It's free so the price is right.

    THanks mate!

I'm fooling with Infraview and will look at a couple of others suggested by you guys

I was thinking Gimp required some hand-tweaking just to get the modules loaded under Windows??? I'll look
