   I have "lost" the ability to update Firefox (3.5.3).
   
   Under the Help tab, "Check for Updates" the button is "shaded".
   
   As well, when I go to Tools>Options>Security>Saved Passwords, my ability to work there is disabled (shaded).
   
   I am pretty sure other things would be disabled too if I were to check.
   
   Any suggestions please?

   Go here and download the latest version
   http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
   scroll down to English (US).
   Just run it; you don't have to uninstall the version you have.
