any one think there will ever be a usb compatible for the human brain?
if so what are the implications of this?

that would be very cool if you could hook your brain up and download new "updates" :-D

The implications are unimaginable of course :major

sounds like all those sci fi books I read. They call it 'wetware', I think in those.

Snow crash and Neuromancer come to mind, plus a ton of other ones. Hopefully, it won't ever happen.

    Hi

Possible as Laura puts it wetware is in development for medical purposes, not as in a USB port, which well could come but not likely in our lifetime, but their are bionic and computerised parts to take over the function of human parts, as in my area eyes, they are developing a type of CCD (digital camera back for implantation into the eye to take over from the rods and cones of the retina). Following after this is the likelyhood of hardwiring it into the optic nerve, so that the data is passed to the part of the brain that serves sight.

Most estimates of human brain capacity I've seen have it at around the 100 terabytes equivalent digital storage if we used a USB 2.0 interface at 320mbps bandwidth which even now is getting a little long in the tooth you could upload your entire brain into a computer in about four days,if you use USB 3.0 at 4.8Gbps you could have yourself uploaded in about half day.

EDIT just make sure you don't hit cut and paste...

While many of these are just light perception and not full colour images, its a step forward, some of the work one of your research groups are working on is how to replace the RPE layer which is the most damaged with some diseases with artifical living materials, opens up a whole new area for artifical skin and maybe generating new body parts if one of yours becomes defective, just think if DNA and materials could do this the likelyhood of rejection and having to wait for a donor is removed.

I'm just loving my job as it takes the computing world and adds medicine to the mix and anythings possible with imagination and more so money and time.
