My sister has a rather old HP computer that uses Windows XP. She tried to install "zoo vet", which says its compatible with Windows versions as early as 98. It seemed to install correctly and then when you tried to run it, it asked if she wanted to play it in full screen or in a window, which it said was more compatible with our system. She hit the window option and a screen popped up searching for a file called, "main" under the file type "director movie". At the top of this window it said, "where is main?". I searched the files that related to the game, but couldn't find any director files. Is the disk defective or is it the computer? The setup for the stupid thing is very basic. The only question it asks is where you want the game files directed to. Anyway, any thoughts would be great.

I checked out the link. That's the game, but I don't think that's what the game was looking for. It seems to me like its missing the file that directs the computer to the game. It asks for me to search for it manually, but I can't find it! Either its hiding in the wrong folder, or its just missing and the disk is corrupt, or something is wrong with the PC. That's what I'm trying to find out. Oh, and one more thing, my sister's computer is NOT connected to the internet, which means I can't download anything. The game does not require an internet connection to play.

I only needed to see what game it was so I could check the FAQs and Support options.
I don't understand what you mean by I don't think that's what the game is looking for.

    1. What version of Quicktime is installed on the computer?
    2. What version of DirectX is installed on the computer?

I think the director movie might have something to do with Quicktime.

He probably saw the "main.html" in the URL and thought that you had assumed that was what the game was looking for when it asked for the "main" file.

I'm not sure if this works in XP...
to determine what version of DirectX is installed in 2K, I click on start then run and in the box I type dxdiag ; it will ask to connect to the internet. I just say no. In the box that pops up the first tab is system. At the bottom of that is my DirectX version.

Okay...I checked the quicktime and Direct X installed on the computer and they were both lower than what was required. i.e. Direct X 4.0 (maybe a bit higher) and Quick time 32 bit. I was going to try and install the Direct X 7 that's on the Zoo vet disk, but the STUPID COMPUTER wouldn't even read the disk this time!!!! (it does that periodically. It really STINKS when you're trying to play a c.d....anyway...rabbit trail...) So I tried installing the thing on my computer, which has the Vista version of Windows. The only thing not up to par was my quicktime (which I rarely use) so I installed the correct version on my computer. SAME SONG SECOND VERSE. It still came up with "cannot find file "main". Now, I've had problems installing older programs not designed for Vista, but if its doing the same thing on Windows XP AND Vista, I doubt its the Windows' fault. I think the disk might be corrupted. If it is the disk, is there anyway to manually download the missing file or is the game just bad and there's nothing to do about it? Thanks for your help.

Contact them for help. Maybe they will send another disk.

As far as Quicktime, even if you do not use it, it needs to be updated because there are security holes in it. As long as your sister's computer does not go on the internet, she doesn't need to be running the latest version.

I'll remember that about the Quicktime. It's a good thing to know. Thanks for all your help! Major Geeks is very quickly becoming one of my fav sites! ;)
