Ok as you can tell from the title my games are not working correctly on my pc. Such games as BF vietnam and battlefield 2, Hitman Blood Money now these are quite demanding games and they run well slow so just moving around the map is a problem.

I have got 256 mb ram 266 with 2.70 ghz 2,71 ghz processors also 256 mb nvidia geforce graphics card and a 128 creative sound card any ideas. ?

    Thanks

    Hi

Your 256mb of ram is going to be your major problem as not only do you have to run the OS with that ram, which will leave not much left for the games and the processing of the 3d polygons etc, while your GFX card has 256mb which is fine you also need at least 512mb+ of ram and preferable 1GB to run those games at some smoothness.

Your soundcard wont be an issue.

What version Nvidia Graphic Card do you have?

One thing you can try is to make sure as many background tasks and applications are disabled, to give you as much ram as possible, things like MSN Messenger, and if your game doesnt need to be played on the net then disconnect the internet and turn off all your security software.... but if its an online game then dont stop security software.

hmm well thats the problem i have only got in 256 mb of ram because i took out 256 to see if either one or both pieces of ram are defective.

The problem started when i installed Battlefield Vietnam and tried playing it, it was well slow like framerate and AI etc so i put in my My nvidia Geforce 6600 256 mb and still no luck i have also bought a new hard-drive since. So it's got to be either the motherboard or cpu or something else i reckon.

    Thanks Halo.

To run BF2,Hitman blood money and pretty much all new games you need minimum 768mb to 1gig of ram

  5. Joker_Joe

nope its not the ram because my brother also plays them and to run BF Vietnam is very low specs. My brother has 512 ram. Is there any video options that are wrong or do you know of any good pc diagnostics tools?

Do you have the latest NVidia drivers?
If you have an AMD processor (which I'm guessing you don't unless you have an FX), the Dual Core Optimizer and latest drivers do wonders.
Have you tried playing at lowest settings possible without taking out any RAM (so you have 512)? Do your brother have similar computer specs?

    I think so,
No i don't but do i need to install drivers for my processor ?
    Yes i Have,

Sorry for neglecting my own Thread! But its just hassle ive been trying to find a program that can give all of your system specs but you can also output to a log so its a simple matter of cut & paste.

Anyone know of any Good System Specs analyzer ? I'm using Aida32 atm.

Thanks Cochese for the link, very useful.

OK i made a report and was thinking of just pasting it here but it would be huge and i didnt know wethere or not to cut bits and pieces out. So i have it as an attachment to this post.

Normally when i see attachments it puts me off of helping the user. Simply because it's more hassle but please can someone have a gander. I really baffled and i've been battling this problem for almost a year now.

    Thanks in advance.

No problem. I am not sure what the minimum specs are for those games, but I would imagine(like the others said) that your ram is the problem.

I would go with what Halo said and try and kill some processes.
How many do you have running?

Well i know i definately meet the system specs for BF1942 and BF vietnam but still have problems. Old games but so good :D.

I think it's the motherboard i'm not sure if you can tell from the report i gave, but that's the only thing i hav'nt changed.

I have taken out 1 ram and still problem put that back in and taken out the other still same problem.

I changed the cpu still problem.

I changed the hard-drive because of failure got new one and still i had 'The Problem'

I had the problem before i put in the graphics card and the sound card.

The only thing left i can think of is the mother board is'nt comunicating properly with the other pieces of hard-ware.

I have shut down some services before playing BF vietnam and still no luck.

These are the services i have running atm.

    Are these idle temps?
Are your temps always this high?

    Temperatures:
    Motherboard 64 °C (147 °F)
    CPU 69 °C (156 °F)
    Aux 38 °C (100 °F)
    GPU 71 °C (160 °F)
    Hitachi HDS728080PLAT20 37 °C (99 °F)

How many fans do you have? What size? Where are they?

Do you have problems when you're not playing games, playing a DVD maybe?

  15. Joker_Joe

    Joker_Joe Private E-2

Erm this is when the computer is on

    I hav'nt tried running a DVD

I only have 1 fan on top of my CPU heat sink running at 3345 rpm

Do you reckon the temps are to high ?

  16. Cochese

Are you saying you don't have any case fans?
    Overheating might be the problem.

I have three case fans plus the cpu fan.

    120mm exhaust on back
    80mm intake on side
    80mm intake on front

    case fans...

  17. Joker_Joe

    Joker_Joe Private E-2

Do you reckon a case fan would, sort this out ?

  18. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

You can test by removing the side of the case,if your temperatures drop considerably some case fans will help, you could also use a deskfan to blow cool air into the case also clean the dust from the heatsinks

Post the specs from the side of your power supply and check your video card properties to make sure the card is running AGPX8 if it isnt it will say PCI mode:)

I have also ran BF2 on a machine with 512ram,1900 cpu and a FX 5700 and it runs fine

So Do you reckon i should install a case fan if so where?

  21. Cochese

    Cochese Specialist

Have you tried running it with just the case open?

You should have at least two fans(intake/exhaust) for good air circulation.

    This is what I have.

    120mm exhaust on back
    80mm intake on side
    80mm intake on front

    Temperatures:
    Motherboard 32 °C (90 °F)
    CPU 47 °C (117 °F)
    Aux 29 °C (84 °F)
    Seagate ST3160812AS 30 °C (86 °F)

    Cooling Fans:
    CPU 3428 RPM
    Front 5079 RPM
    Rear 576 RPM

Alright, first of all, cooling with the side off doesn't *look* like a problem. I recommend killing some unneeded services in Windows to free up RAM.
    http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12
This will supply you with the information needed. Read through *all* of them to see if you don't actually need that service, and then close it down. This'll free up enough to improve your system's performance somewhat.
Also, when looking back on your RAMs speed, it's seriously lacking. 266 is just... well, bad. Consider upgrading to the 400 something RAM. I'm running with a gigabyte of that, and it works fine. The only other thing that could be dragging down system performance is malware (at least this is what I presume, I wouldn't know because I specialize in making computer systems their most efficient, and working with networks and gaming, *not* dealing with malware. I only hear that malware slows down computer systems, and from my personal experiences, does it significantly.)
Sound card, video card, and processor looks good, so you don't need to change those. Other than that also, follow the advice given and get the drivers for the dual-core and the latest drivers for your video card. That can do a lot of performance damage. I can think of nothing else that can help you.

i think you just need to put a new stick of ram in there, i'm running on 512 ram and i can run f.e.a.r. (yay!!!!) so you know if you got everything else just add some ram 512=$50 or go for 1gig=$100 XD

hmm.. well i have tried shutting down the process's before but no change.

Also where would i find these drivers for my processor ive searched and searched with no luck.

Could my hardware not work well together and because of that it uses up alot of system resources?

If so how would i overcome this?

Why is 400 Mhz better than 266 MHz ? I know its faster but surely it shouldnt matter if the games require 256 and i got 512 ?

  33. Zorkman

    Zorkman Private E-2

Speed is important in RAM. The more speed it has, the faster it can put things, and take things, off and on the chip itself.
Anyway, I want you to look at your IRQ settings. Right-click the My Computer icon, click properties, then Hardware, then device Manager. Inside the Device Manager, click View, then Resources By Connection. As soon as you've done that, check the Interrupt Request area. If any two things have the same IRQ, that may be your problem right there.
It's not about killing processes either, thats a one-time thing. You want to disable them from automatically come up and chew up valuable resources.

Ok well i have got two pairs:

    SCSI/Raid Host controller

    and

    Microsoft ACPI-Compliant system

Both have number 9 and :

D-Link Airplus DWL -G520 Wirless PCI Adapter

    and

SiS 900-Based PCI Fast ethernet adapter

    Both have number 19.

Is this wrong, i dont have any experince in this area

  35. Zorkman

    Zorkman Private E-2

Okay, yes, it's bad. Any two things under the same IRQ port is fighting for the attention of the processor, ultimately slowing down the system, but those are not used in any game other than on the internet, so I wouldn't worry about it-- unless you want faster response times for your internet.
The two ways to change them are in your BIOS, or change the location of the card itself (only on some motherboards). I don't have much experience in this field either, but I had an IRQ problem with my 6600GT, and I just moved around my sound card and it was fixed. But your motherboard may be different. Remember, go into your BIOS to change it if you want, otherwise don't mess around with it.
The only thing I can see that could possibly be dragging down game performance is your RAM. I suggest you get more, and faster, RAM.

  36. Joker_Joe

    Joker_Joe Private E-2

Surely if the game only requires 256 and ive got 512 then the problem isnt down to Ram?

What ram do you recomend ? 400 Mhz 1 gb ?

Also is there anything else i can do on whole to make my computer better?

you may see another post pop up again if the ram dosent fix it.

  37. Zorkman

    Zorkman Private E-2

400 MHz of 1 gig RAM'll be sufficient, for a while. And the only way to make your computer better is to start on an upgrade spree. Don't forget to look up reviews for any product you're going to purchase.

but bf2 is completely different than bf vietnam i had a hard running that bf2 smooth with a e6400 processor and 1 gb of ddr2 ram i just had to much stuff running and my memory need to be more.listen to me i have a 7900gtx,4.2 ghz processor, new egg was sold out my ram so i couldnt buy more but 1 gb of ddr2 and i couldnt run it on low with it not skipping.

AFAIK he never mentioned trying to play BF2.

The temps you posted seem fine to me, except the motherboard looks a little hot.
In terms of case fans, the most ideal airflow would be intake on (or near) the front and exhaust on the back, to make sure everything's covered. I have three case fans (side, top, back), and the case temp is quite cool. Two should be enough, though, with one near the front and one on the back.

If and when you install more RAM, plus fans (or other method of airflow, such as the side panel off and a regular plug-in fan blowing inside), and that doesn't help your problem...*shrugs*

Hmm.. i got some new ram, i got an extra 512 running at 400 mhz but because i only have 2 ram ports its only upgraded by 256. So now i have 768 mb ram.

I installed CS:S today and to my utmost annoyance i have this problem in this game. I think it may be FPS because i play CS:S at FPS of 10.46 average. I know this is seriously crap.

I think i have found the problem, I went into my IRQ settings again and next to my Vidia geforce 6600 (IRQ 16) it says PCI next to it any help ?
