Hey guys im kinda new to computer games iv mostly stuck to xbox live, but one of my buddies bought world war craft and i fell in love with it but my cpu tower is pretty old and i dont have the stuff to run it. I was wondering how much it would cost to build me a gaming tower? case, motherboard, processor, fans, everything. Not an all out hardcore gaming setup but one i can play pretty much any game and still run through other programs quickly.

    thnx yall.

it depends on your budget. WoW doesn't need the best of the best hardware to run, so any budget from $500-$800 upward will make sense.

i'm thinking some sort of athlon64 socket 939, any motherboard except ecs, geforce 6600, gig of ram, chaintech av710, etc.

Mine cost me about 2k, but that's partially because we didn't shop around, and partially because I wanted the best of everything. IF you're careful you can get a good setup for about a thousand, maybe less, but a word of warning for this game, the better the set up, the less lag you have to deal with.

If i were building a new system for gaming and general usage i would go with either a 3.2 P4 Extreme (which i have) or the Athlon 64 3500, with 1Gb of DDR (preferably dual channel) and a decent board (dont buy cheap motherboards you WILL regret it. Hard drive should be at least 120GB with 8mb buffer (SATA ot ATA133). Graphics wise its all down to cash, i would recommend a minimum GF6600 series but if you can afford it, go with a high end 6800 Ultra (Gainward for preference). You should be able to pick all this up with a 17" TFT and all ancillary gubbins for about £1000.

True, but unless you have a fairly powerful system you will not like the game at higher lvls. My lvl 59 hunter does a lot of raids. With 20 players and 15 mobs I never miss a frame. I run an Athlon 64 3800 and ATI X850 - water cooled and overclocked. Perhaps a bit of overkill for WOW. My friend's 9800 pro and Athlon 3000+ does fine until the fighting gets crowded then his play gets choppy.

If you can manage the $$ go with the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, 1 gig of Corsair RAM, the fastest Athlon 64 you can muster. This setup will last a long time and be extremely stable. You will have a future-proof system.

If you cannot get the fastest video card, go for a slower one for now. It will play WOW fine and in a couple months when you are lvl 60 you will have saved up $$ for a high end video card.

Currently Intel is not a good soution for gamng CPU's.

Intels putting out chips and upgrading them faster than ever, we're talking a better chip every two months, but there's bugs in that. As well as the intel motherboards don't work as well as they used to, mine's had to be replaced five times in the three montsh since i've built this computer, and it's starting to look like I'll have to do it again soon. Also, It's hard to get the heat sinks working properly. They're a 775 socket meaning you have to get the adapter and the other fans, and hope its enough to keep it cool. Water cooled a good solution, if you can find a reasonably priced setup, including installation.

I might also add that their rating system(3200+,3400+, etc) is actually starting to hold weight :p

Sorry boys but my 3.2EE runs anything you like at less than 100% usage at a max 45 degrees and cost me under 200 pounds, my mate bought an 64 bit athlon at the same time it took him two months and 3 motherboards to get it running due to BIOS compatibilty issues :-( .Not all P4's are 775LGA there are plenty of old P4's out there that will cut even modern FPS's like HL2 and Farcry apart as long as you have a decent GFX card, most processors are the same gaming wise really.

As long as the game you're playing uses the GFX card, otherwise Processor is most important.

My winchester a543500 cost me £180 and it still costs £180 2months later,it hovers around 50 with the stock cooling while running cpu stress test TOAST,it worked first time in my neo2 plat board, your friend should have checked the bios revision supported his chip and as for gaming

In URT2004 my winny sits just below the 3.4EE for less than one third the price, your 3.2EE loses 13fps to my winny
In FARCRY it loses 16fps,Sorry LOL! :D ;)

World of Warcraft is not very processor intensive. It is extrememly memory intensive though. Your going to want at least 512mb. I would recommend getting a Gig though. As for a processor I'm very happy with my new 3.0ghz P4 Prescott. Runs smooth as silk on any game I've played so far. Heat is no issue either. But that may be because I have 5 case fans. :)

where do get an EE for 300$?(I'm not sure the conversion rate but 200 pounds couldn't be more than 300 US$) All the EEs I've ever seen are ~1000US$.

I found this: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-197&depa=1 ..but that isn't the EE.

Exactly what I wanted to say but wasnt sure,I know the gallatin cores are expensive, stupidly expensive,on the chart at toms hardware he has an extreme edition with a prestonia core these are put in xeons which are also expensive so I just used those numbers to compare to an a64 since it beat them both anyway!

The conversion rate is about $1.9 to £1

You do the math LOL :D

My P4 is OC'd at 3.6 ATM with no problems and with its 6800 Ultra its a gaming powerhouse, so as i said before, it really dont matter which CPU you go for, as long as you make sure all the other components are as good as the CPU etc...

Oh yes and anythings better than the crappy new laptop i got today, 1.6Ghz indeed, corporate IT departments blow

Yeah, but i just dont like massive generalising staements "Intel is not a good choice for gaming" sorry but thats just wrong :)

just to clarify my 3.2 EE cost me 172 pounds, runs at <50 degrees full load and its at 3.8Ghz so why is that not a good gaming cpu ?

Yes it does, read it again,it says Intel made the extreme edition,it doesnt say that cpu is an extreme edition.
    Vary dodgy marketing
That cpu is just a basic P4 and in games a full 25fps slower than an A64 even worse than the extreme edition.
That is why intel is a bad choice for games. It is slower.
You wouldnt buy a car for speed if it was slower and more expensive than the one next to it would you?
Thats what the intel is to gaming.

I have just spoken to my brother who is a business law student,at first I thought it was illegal advertising, but he says its a play on words the first part of the statement describes the product then at the end they have just thrown in extreme edtion without a trademark, obviuosly to make search engines find thier site,so while we both now think it is legal,it is very bad busness practice, nether of us are fully qualified me much less than him so if anyone else has an opinion we would love to hear it.

I've always been of the opinion that AMD's are superior chips, both in power, and performance, as well as speed, and reliability. They might have a slight disadvantage in heat, but that's not much of a problem if you're a serious gamer. Chances are you'll have planned for heat. I'm going to be sure to get water cooling for my next comp.
