Hi all! I just installed the x64 W7 RC on a work PC and it's so sickeningly fast that I'm seriously considering dumping XP Pro at home and installing x64 W7. But I'm wondering if the games I play are W7 x64 compatible... I play some slightly older stuff: the first STALKER, the first FEAR (which I just finished :celebrate ), Doom3 (old but still cool), Serious Sam 2 (old but way too much fun). The newest game I play regularly is FarCry2 (it came free with my GTX260 video card) and I'm sure it's OK with x64, but I'm not sure about the others. I'll be getting the 2nd STALKER and FEAR fairly soon and I don't think there'd be an issue with those... I'm mainly concerned with Serious Sam 2. It's probably my favorite game, and it's the oldest. No, I haven't done any research on it. Yes, I realize I could have posted this in the gaming forum, but I think it fits the software forum a bit better. ;)

    Thanks!

    Hi dlb

Like most of us we would do our own research on this or even just install the games and try them out, not had issues with FarCry2 or Crysis in Win7 RC x64 but make sure you check for any game patches for x64 for the games you mention as some may have them to run correctly.

If the really older ones dont work try them in compatability mode.

Also if they dont work try adding at the end of the shortcuts properties target box listing to the games location the -DX9 switch.

Dont bother benchmarking the games as many dont like DX11 that Win7 comes with for benching.

:-o Yeah... I know.... I've been mega busy lately and have had little 'personal' time, and the time I do have is spent eating and sleeping. I just don't want to wipe XP only to find out that my older games won't run on a 64 bit OS. I guess I will check in to some patches before I wipe. I guess I was just hoping that someone had already tried running these games (or games of a similar age) on W7 x64 to save my lazy-a** from having to research it myself. LOL
Ahhh... now this is some info I can really use. Much better than the post that was edited out. LOL Thanks Halo! You have knack for pointing out the path....

    :-D

    Hi dlb

Gladly swap you your schedule for mine ;)

But on the games topic, just quickly looking over what other beta testers are saying on the techbeta NG, is that most seem to work ok if a year or so old,

Fallout3 ~ may need to run via the Launcher App over directly (patch is in the making)
Sims3 ~ seems to work ok
Cryostasis ~ various mileage some work some not but need to make sure latest Physx is installed (comes with latest Nvidia drivers iirc)

Some note games via Steam causing issues, but like most issues some have no issue and some have no end of problems, so its a bit of a gamble as to whether some games will work or not, straight out of box or need the latest patches (if available) or need to wait for the games companies to release patches when Win7 goes RTM... like driver and many software makers, they all tend to wait till RTM version as less work to recode and release a working patch for said game.

I've not tried any other games apart fromt he two above, but maybe some other Geeks may have tried some Games in x64 Win7 and will let us know what works or not or any workarounds to get them going.

Again, more great info.... thanks again. I did a bit of research and it appears that I won't have any problems with any of the games I listed except for Serious Sam 2. It's supposedly compatible with XP 64bit, but I've read of some folks having issues with Vista 64bit, but other folks have none.... I guess I'll just have to try it and see what happens. *fingers crossed*

I ran Serious Sam on W7 64 with no issues at all (as well as Vista Home Premium 64)

    Hi Serious Sam

Did the game work straight from default install or did you need to patch or tweak the game as in compatibility settings at all?

but cheers for the feedback on this game working in x64, every little helps :)

You say "after the patch" are you refferring to the 'dual-core patch' for Serious Sam 2? I believe it's v2.066.... if not, exactly which patch are you referring to?

(BTW- please ban the user that posted #8 above - spam/crap alert!)
