I live in Northern California. I expected and predicted that gas would hike 40 to 50 cents this next month.

It was 297 or 299 at some stations and 282 at Costco last Saturday. Tonight, I noticed the local UnocalPhillips station was now at 325, 335 and 345 a gallon- up 25 cents in 36 hours. I guess if Norco and Baton Rouge don't flow East, then of course it would affect the San Francisco refining-----

I don't mind a hike, but this gas was in the tanks in the ground, and our gas is all refined in California by law. C'mon big oil companies, hike it as you replace it, don't openly abuse us!

Sorry to vent. Still makes me mad to see greed rampant.

We get so little oil from the middle east?
Why the high prices?......can you say rip-off.
I live in SoCal....I can drive 30 miles and see 30 to 40 cents a gallon difference.

Some reading on the whole oil gas scam

be sure to guess which one we import the most from (hint none!)
    http://www.gravmag.com/oil.html

    http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/usa.html#oil
    Petroleum Imports/Exports
The United States averaged total net oil (crude and products) imports of an estimated 11.8 million bbl/d during January-October 2004, representing around 58% of total U.S. oil demand. Crude oil imports from Persian Gulf sources averaged 2.4 million bbl/d during that period. Overall, the top suppliers of crude oil to the United States during January-October 2004 were Canada (1.6 million bbl/d), Mexico (1.6 million bbl/d), Saudi Arabia (1.5 million bbl/d), Venezuela (1.3 million bbl/d), and Nigeria (1.1 million bbl/d).

Looking for another link.....who's the 3rd largest oil producer?
USA....."United States had 21.9 billion barrels of proved oil reserves as of
    January 1, 2005"
US Production capacity, about 8 million barrels per day, is accomplished with about 533,000 oil wells, averaging less than 17 barrels per well per day. Saudi capacity, similar at about 8-9 million barrels per day, is from 750 wells
In 1996, the USA was the world's leading producer, with about 7.5 million barrels per day

And opec having problems? We shouldn't even see the change or have one!

But we pay so they stick US

Over here in NY, the gas has been at a steady 2.79 per gallon for the past month (at least).(regular).
I went and got gas today cause there's talk it will go up a dollar (holy geez) by Labor day weekend!
We'll just have to wait and see.....

it's such a scam. Anyone have any idea how much the price per barrel would have to jump in order to warrant jumps of 7 or even 10 cents over night much less 20 cents? We're being played like a cheap fiddle.

  8. BoredOutOfMyMind

WRONG we don't import as much oil to warrant that logic.

We import unleaded refined gasoline. 11 percent of which was offloaded at the Louisiana Oil Offshore Port. Also we refine about 20 percent of the oil in these areas. I lived in Houma, LA and remember Texaco had a 36 inch pipeline from Baton Rouge to Washington. That now supplies jet fuel, and it is not flowing.

What we are seeing is price hikes before there are shortages though. California has plenty of gas this week. Now New York state may have some shortages already.

What I am saying is if they hike the price, hike it next week, not now and not so far away.

For the record, 25% of the US oil and gas capacity is out of commission at the moment.

    http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/45974.html

A large chunk of the US oil refineries that make gasoline from crude oil were also knocked out.

    http://www.forbes.com/technology/feeds/ap/2005/08/31/ap2198623.html

Not defending so much as just trying to get the facts straight.

Bottom line is that even with the strategic oil reserves being released, our refining capacity is significantly impaired indefinitely, and we'll be seeing prices soar all over the country for a while.

    From the Department of Energy:

    http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/iea/glossary.html#P

In other words, reserves that we know exist, are reachable, and won't cost more than they're worth to reach. Note that "reserves" in this statement implies buried miles under the ground and in need of drilling/extraction, not that it's sitting in some warehouse somewhere waiting for the optimal time to bring it out in order to get the best possible profit from it.

  14. Beast_USA

I didn't think it was in a warehouse somewhere LOL where are you from  .....bottom line we have that much.....and if they admit to that.....we have much more.

  15. Sgt. Tibbs

It still needs to be refined, and since our refineries were hit hard, that's going to be a huge challenge.

Unless, of course, you know a method of which I am unaware that allows vehicles to run crude oil rather than gasoline?

  16. Tabasco

    Tabasco Private First Class

I'm from Louisiana, although I do not currently live there.

And yes, crude oil needs to be extracted and refined. It's not a matter of setting up something overnight to put a rig in and drill the miles and miles through the earth's crust to get to the oil to extract it, nor is it that quick to transport it from there to refineries and refine it.

FYI, though, I just heard the head of the EPA announce that they're putting a temporary moratorium on the environmental standards placed on gasoline to allow the refineries that are working to refine crude oil faster and produce gasoline faster in order to alleviate the financial burden the country will face from this.

  17. Mississippimud

    Mississippimud Private E-2

as much as i hate defending "big oil" it isnt really a case of gouging as it is supply or projected lack of supply. for the immediate future its not the cost of crude by rather the shortage of capacity to refine.

the wholesale price of gas rose yesterday about 40cents a gallon to about $2.50/gallon. that translates to about $3.10/gallon pump price.

now even though the gas in the tanks at your local station are already paid for. if the local station doesnt raise prices now he may not be able to afford to buy his next load of gas.

before you yell "but what about the BIG companies". well, if they cant refine their own then they will have to buy on the spot market just like the independants.

the profit margin for retailers is very low around 10cents a gallon on average. then take from that about 7.5cents/gallon (based on pump price of $2.50/gal) if the customer pays with a credit card and your local station wether an independant or large chain isnt making much.

as i have said before, prices will continue to rise untill demand goes down significantly. add to that a major disaster and $4.00 a gallon may not be far off. :(

  18. Just Playin

    Just Playin MajorGeek

It's not the oil supply, it's the refinery supply. They are running at 98% capacity, so if any refinery goes down, it makes a serious cut in gas and other refined petroleum products. Don't hold your breath waiting for oil companies to build more, either.

  19. Mississippimud

    Mississippimud Private E-2

actually the oil companies have wanted to build more. they have been stopped time and again by communities who all say "not in my back yard you dont". this happened in the Phoenix area about 10 years or so ago. and it has happend elsewhere in the country as well.

You think you have it bad... we are near 5000 miles away and our price of petrol is going up ( equal to $7.40 a gallon ), lets just spare a small thought for the dead in the affeced area of a major oil fields and oil production states, which may have lead to a rise in world oil prices..... YES?

sad thing is just playin and Missi~mud touched on part of the problem the US has Gov oil reserves but it makes no difference releasing those as the companies that refine oil havnt upgraded for years ( read... want to make big profits for no outlay ) and have no spare capacity to get more stocks to trh public to lower the price, they are all playing to small margins on production and not refining oil until needed which bumps the price up if a slump or disaster strikes as their are finite stocks on petrolium held.

some countries hold massive stocks oil crude eg. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0872964.html

and some of the biggest users dont even produce or refine oil but have the lower prices that the producing/refining countires?????
    http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0922041.html

I have to wonder whos making $$££ out of this, Oil Execs, Stock Market players, the GOV ( UK especially with 70% tax/duty )

I have a thirsty~ish car... not the norm for Europe as we have many cars that do 40~50+ mpg.. but if yours does less than say my 25mpg then change car to a more frugal mode of transport or pay the price! a car doesnt need to be a monster to get you from A to B?

Supply and Demand!!!! And unfortunately...our society doesn't allow very much leway for the demand to go down!! However I do agree that some people could drive a not so beast of a car!!!! As long as we buy it...they will continue to do what they are doing now!!

Unfortunately this all affects those hardest that aren't making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year...and most of their check goes to buying gas so they can get to work so they can buy gas to get to work!!!! There are ALOt of people on minimum wage out there, that are getting hit the hardest!!!!

If something doesn't give soon then I have a strong suspicion that the US atleast will go into a pretty strong recession!!!!

the good news is... at some point prices will go down. (how much is anyones guess)

bad news is... how high will they have to go before it happens.

demand is the only thing that will have any lasting effect on prices of gas. it will happen in one of two ways.

    1) voluntary... meaning, we the people CHOOSE to cut back our consumption.

    2) involuntary... when prices get so high that most of us HAVE to cut back.

What they will do...drive the prices sooooo high that when it does go back down to...(for the sake of argument) 3.00...everyone will be sooo happy that they are catching a break!!! And nobody will bitch about the fact that it is indeed still 3.00 dollars!!!!

Around the corner from my house (Citgo) 3.05...2 miles down the road (BPAmoco) 2.95...they are always about 10 cents cheaper than anyone else!!

Just got this tonight from a friend in Atlanta tonight
    :
"2 of the largest pipelines on the east coast are Colonial and Plantation; one of their major terminuses is in Atlanta, more specifically Doraville. The facilities have approximately 10 days storage, and the pipelines have gone dry 2 days ago!

Fights broke out here and gas went from $2.59 to $5.50

    You bet-ca-YA!

What a holiday. Problem maybe 2 weeks tops?"

Here is an idea ..... HEMP!!! I've been saying this for years. Hemp is a proven alternative fuel source. Burns cleaner than gas too.

In one place gas is $1.60 per litre or $6.05 per U.S. gallon. Three miles west of me it's $1.10 per litre ($4.16 per U.S. gallon) and two miles east it's $1.25 per litre ($4.73 per U.S. gallon).

  32. rogvalcox

    rogvalcox MajorGeek

That's all well and good, but...odds are...everyone who participates in that theory will go fill up the day before so they can make throught the 4 days, so they will have a surge of sales that will make up for those not buying gas in those 4 days!!

Unfortunately...this society doesn't allow for much play in what we can and can't do as far as driving!! You've still got to go to work, and take the kids to school or sports practice, or go to the doctor, go pick up some groceries, etc., etc., etc.!!!!

I think this is the first time in years I'm actually glad I take public transportation to work.

Car's dead as a doornail anyway.

I anticipate this being a longer problem rather than a shorter one. It might not be on par with 1978, but I wouldn't be surprised. All it would take is one terrorist bomb on the right pipeline in Saudi Arabia and we'd be seeing $5/gallon become normal for a long time.
