Most of the difference in the per liter or per gallon price between different countries is due to different fuel tax rates.

A few years back it would have been even different for the US...we are now catching up to the world.:(

There's huge difference in the US even by state...because of taxes as shnerdly says.

We've just had a threat of fuel trucker strikes so everyone has been panic buying and self fulfilled the fuel shortage prophecy.rolleyes

I had this conversation with my father while the news was on TV.

Dad "Look at all those idiots going out buying all the fuel"
Me "What do you mean, didn't you go and fill your tank up because of the threat?"
    Dad "Yeah but I'm special."

:-D Do as a I say not as I do...

@ Rikky, Here's a link about the British shortage of gas prediction. http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/201...canada&ir=Canada#s824768&title=Sales_Of_Jerry Indeed a self full-filling prophecy.

@ LauraR As far as I understand, different prices for gas per country were calculated into the chart. Here in Canada, prices for gas vary widely per province. AFAIK, usually more in Eastern Canada.

@ shnerdly I know for a fact that, for instance, the Netherlands pay a lot in taxes for gas.

The economists UK % as they state is a bit distorted as we have have high gas (petrol) prices for years so out markup is not so significant in their chart, however then I passed a garage today and unleaded at £1.43 per litre and converting that the USA speak its

$2.29 per litre and as a US Gallon is 1 US gallon = 3.78541178 ltrs is roughtly is $8.66 per gallon.

Our tax in the UK is a large 60-70% on fuel as a fuel duty as other countries do not have this taxation level, any rise in their raw petrol price is seen as significant.
