Gateway 6510GZ power/battery issues

hello all,

slight problem here i was wondering if i could get some advice on. hopefully this requires nothing more than changing my battery, but here's the story:

so suddenly my gateway 6510gz notebook doesn't want to turn on at all. i've never had major problems with it, and it was still running on the original battery that came with it when i bought it in late May of 2005.

but now (most of the time) it won't turn on and the battery will not take charge, in other words, the little purple light to indicate that the battery is charging won't even light up. i checked the cord and everything with the cord is fine.

once in a while if i take the battery out and then put it back in, i could get the computer to turn on but then it just completely shuts off on its own before the desktop appears. same with the charge-- if i take the battery out and put it back in i could get the purple light to appear for a couple hours as if the battery was charging, but then it will simply turn off.

any ideas? do i just need a new battery??

 

Random shutdowns definitely sound like a power problem. However, I think that it will be a process of elimination to find the exact cause. I would recommend that you try replacing the AC cable first, because it is easy to install, and cheap to replace. If that doesn't solve the problem, then I would try replacing the battery. If replacing the cable does fix the problem, then you've saved yourself the expense of the battery.
