I have a 2gb Gateway 830GM Desktop. My memory went bad so I thought I would buy 4gb and upgrade from 2 to 4gb. There are four slots on the motherboard. Two slots have white clips and the two others have black clips.

I was able to install 2 (1gb) PC-3200 sticks in the white clips. Now, when I tried to put the other two clips in the computer, it won't start. Do the different colors mean something. Is there a configuration I need to do in order to get the other 2 gb in the computer. I'm running Windows 7. I'm seriously confused. :confused

    Welcome to Major Geeks.

The specs on your PC indicate it maxes out at 2GB memory:

I'm guessing it has four slots in the event someone wanted to insert 4x 512Mb memory. If possible, I'd return the extra 2 chips for a refund.

    Hope this helps. :)
