Hello, im trying to help a friend and fix his Gateway E4000 Pc, i thought since it didnt show any video that it must be the motherboard as the video is built on. I ordered a MB and replaced it just now, same results
Green light on power button, yoiu can hear the fan come on, green light on motherboard and power supply.

    What else do i check?

    Thanks

Sorry this sounds dumb but I have to ask since you didn't state it.. Did you check the monitor?

    What OS are you using?

You never mentioned the HD powering up

Have you tried to place the HD in another PC to see if it boots?

What was he doing with it before it went out?

    Sorry about the first question

    Monitor is mine...works fine
    OS...xp pro
Dont know what he was doing when it went out,
Most of the time when i have seen a HD go out it still posts something, flickers or something.....monitor is totally dead when hooked to this PC.

Not really sure how to tell if the HD is powering up or not...it doesnt have lights on it.

Could this be the power supply??

All seems to be powered up...... what does the test switch suppose to show on the side of the power supply?

    thanks

your not even getting post beeps or anything.

Theoretically if the power supply is not supplying power to the mobo then no the monitor will not come on it would be just as it would be in sleep mode. but the only problem you state there is a green light when then power button is pressed. I'm not sure if the power supply is not powering at full power that would cause the other hardware on the computer to not work. I'm not an expert on the power supplies so I'm probably not the one to give you suggestions on what your next move is.
Last suggestion have you checked the ram. I don't know if faulty ram would stop the post beep but it would stop the computer from functioning but to what extent I don't know.
I guess you need to hang on hopefully someone with more expertise will come through and assist you. I'm going to monitor this because it has peeked my interest

Unplug everything from the mother board except the CPU, memory, PSU, speaker and power switch. do you get a single bleep from speaker when it comes on?

ok...unhooked everything, turn it on and you hear a pop/crackle from the speakers when you first turn it on.
Power button reamins green the whole time.

    No video

You should be getting a POST beep.

My bet would be bad cpu, if power supply is at least running,[and it did run the other pc]. If you could post a little history of how the other pc acted it might help. ed

Whe i got the replacement mother board it came with a 2ghz processor already installed. It does exactly like the mb that i took out,

whats the chances of both mb's and processors doing the same thing?

    NO POST BEEP

    thanks

Some of the post gave you ideas on what could be wrong , now it's up to you to make the decision and try them.

On the computer un hook everything from the motherboadr except whats needed to get started. (mobo, power supply, hd ,ram) fire it up and see if it post beeps.

as far as my other post you should be able to hear if the hd is powering up when you press the power button.

If you still can't tell if the hd is firing, place it in another computer, you need to know if it's working.

if you have more than one bar of memory in it try removing one then try starting up if not swap the memory for the other bar try again.

You might have a faulty PSU one of the rails might be down at this point you need a multi meter, do you have one or know someone with one?

I tired booting it with and without its 1 memory stick...no beeps no post.
I always thought when the memory was bad you didnt get video but you did get beeps.
As for the HD i always thought even with a bad hardrive it will still post to the bios...atleast some type of video.

I took it to a repair shop and will be anxious to see what i missed.

    Thanks for all the info

Sorry we couldn't figure it out but when you get it back please post the results. Your solution could possibly help someone else who may run across the same problem

    Hi Ken,

There is no possibility of anything working with no memory at all. No Hard Drive is needed to get to the BIOS but a bad HD can keep it from even getting there. Any shorts or anything that will cause heavy current draw will keep the PSU from powering up.

    Luck, Jim

original motherboard bad as i thought
New one bought off ebay bad, same symptoms as original MB
Replac ement from Ebay seller ...now works fine!

So it was indeed the motherboard!

    Thanks for all your help
