I have a Gateway computer system running Windows XP home edition. `I upgraded a few months ago and haven't had any problems until a few days ago. I left my computer on standby overnight, and when I went to use it in the morning, the display was tall and long and vibrating. My daughter hit the screen button on the monitor and it quit, and went back to the normal size. Now the display is stretched out past the edges of the screen, and I can't get it back to normal. Also the colors on the screen are a lot darker. I've tried a lower resolution, I've tried resizing with the osd, but neither one works. I've also gone in and tried resetting my wallpaper to center from stretched, but that hasn't worked. I've looked on Microsoft and Gateway's sites both for help, and they haven't helped at all. I did a search on the internet, and found one lady that had the exact same problem I do, but no one had any help for her. I tried to update my display driver, but I keep getting the message that I've got the latest software for my video (it's Intel Graphics). I even tried to do a system restore, but can't get into it. And now, I can't even get into Safe mode. Any help?

Seeing as you have the latest drivers ready to install try going to the device manager & uninstalling you driver, reboot, then load it again.

Hope you don't mean you are now locked out of windows by saying you can't get into safe mode.

could be wrong but i think y7ou are working in the wrong area,i think the monitor is the problem and not your windows settings,is there a reset on the monitor?can you even get into the settings by working the buttons on the front of your monitor?

Hipster, I tried uninstalling the drive, and reinstalling. Still having the same problem. Haven't tried going back in thru Safe mode yet. Still very frustrated.
Tunered, I can use the onscreen display setter, but when I try to adjust the width of the display, nothing happens. I think it has something to do with DirectDraw being in stretched mode, and I don't know how to change that.

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions.

    maybe you can try this,

Reboot your computer and repeatedly press f8 until a boot menu appears. Choose the option "Enable VGA mode". This should boot windows in 640x480. See if that changes anything. If it does, then your resolution or refresh rate are the issue.
