Gateway GZ7220 No Post

Hopefully someone has worked on one of these before. It's an all in one unit. The system powers on, but I get no video. I've tried replacing the RAM (mainly because that's the only part that isn't proprietary). The only clue that I have is that when I power on the machine with no memory I get post beeps from the motherboard (telling me that no memory is installed). This leads me to believe that the motherboard is working.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

Download the hardware guide- it will helpto see what is under which panel.
I have not seen many good writeups on these, and unfortunately, I have not managed to get Oone to open up, and see ,either.
But I would first consider the data/power cable to see if it is faulty. In the reviews I looked at it would appear that Gateway don't want to know after the years warrenty, and it seems that people think the screens go - It probably has not got a vga port, and I have not messed with tv-out, so I don't know if that is possible, to see if you are getting a picture.
I also don't know if the power/data cable can be replaced, or, if its just an internal connection like a laptop.
If its like a laptop, it could have a twin lead coming from the motherboard to the screen, and this could be where the fault lies, as it appears that the motherboard is working.
I think the manual might help up to a point, but as I have worked on many different laptops, as well as computers (I am only a hobbyist geek) I would not mind betting its either that lead to the screen, or, the graphics card, as apparently these do , or, can have a graphics card fitted.
    I hope that helps.

This is for Higgins & Logic..listen..i'm in a quagmire..i tried to raid my GZ7220 from bios instead of letting Intel's Matrix do it in windows..& i erased my HDD when i deleted the raid..so what i'm asking of either one of you is that i need to reinstall the factory restore version of my PC (GZ7220)..so if anyone has made a factory backup (MySpare Backup)..a spare HDD with the factory system installed..if i can borrow the current HDD so i can clone it & then go to restore..OR!!?? if you're selling your PC..(which will be the last resort for me)..(laughing)..please help me..i really don't use this PC for what you 2 use it for..but i really want the factory version back on my PC..if you can help me out..i'd gladly compensate you for your time and effort..(as you both know..Gateway has stopped providing restore disks for XP and Vista..& customer service is virtually non-existant)..so that's my story..i was stupid..(laughing)..but i need some help..thank you both in advance..Peace..& God bless you & yours..

    A-Weapons..South Bronx, NYC..

this is fior Higgins & Logic?? did you 2 make a spare back up of your GZ7220?? if so?? or if you can LEND me your HDD so i can clone it..i'd gladly compensate you..i need to resore my PC back to its factory settings..thank you both..

    A-Weapons..South Bronx, NYC..

& this is for Higgins..in MOST cases..if you do NOT get video..(& the GZ7220 has a separate card)..then it's the card..(it's the motherboard when you have the video intergrated into the board)..so just see if you can find the AMD/ATI card for it..(i think it's the Mobility 2600..they have a bunch of them on Ebay for like 75-100)..but to both of you..i really need your help..i pray that you made a backup..PLEASE tell me that you did..(laughing)..again..thank you..

    A-Weapons..

Higgins..just to kind of answer your question..(and not beg you for help)..(laughing)..when the video card is separate from the mobo..then it's USUALLY the card..now if it was intergrated in the mobo..then it's the mobo..Ebay has the ATI card you need for like 75-100..(it's the Radeon HD Mobility 2600)..so if you can send a little dough..buy the card..& 9 times out of 10..it's the card that's your problem..Peace..

Might sound complicated, but I have used Partition Wizard Home Edition
    http://majorgeeks.com/Partition_Wizard_Home_Edition_d6175.html
Believe it- you can undo the partitions, if you go very carefully, using this tool. I managed to get right back to factory, by carefully choosing which partition to roll back.
It can also show the hidden recovery partition- this is usually around 5gb in size- If you can see that still when you use the partition wizard, you are half way there. Just do't delete that small partition, but delete any other partition, one at a time, and the previous partion will be there, with any luck .
It is possible that if you leave that small partition, that you can change it to a bootable partition, and do a factory restore by etting it to the active partition, and starting from that little gem.
You can also use partEdit32 ,or, Ptedit similarly

Sorry, missed abit off- If you have any windows disc, as you cannot get into the hard drive, then install ut, no need to activate it, just need it to install partition wizard.:-o

to Sachs & Logic..thank you, fellas..i'm going to try this now..but i'm telling you..(Logic)..i don't think it'll work..as Sachs had mentioned..i already installed the Vista disks to both systems..& even worse..i installed the factory disk from the GM5688E to one of them..so i have a GZ7220 (Intel) with GM5688E (AMD) drivers..LOL..it works though..but again..i need the factory reset for this one..(GZ7220)..i'll try Logic's way..& Logic..if you're right..i'll send you some money via PayPal...thanks again..Peace..& God bless..

A-Weapons..i had made an apps & drivers disk..but it will not install any of the apps..

If you have written over the disc since losing the partition then you may as well skip trying to recover the old partitions. There won't be enough usable files to boot an OS.

Maybe someone will read the post and come up with the factory disc you need.

To Sachs..you may be right, Brother..but it seems that Logic's way is working..i'm using DiskGenius instead of Partition Wizard..(Hirem's Ultimate Disk)..it gives me an option to recover files before i formatted the HDD's..& so far..it's recovered 209,889 files..but it's mad long though..LOL..it's been like 1 1/2 hours..& it's only 25% done..this may take 6 hours..but i'm going to ride this out until the end..worse case scenario..i buy another GZ7220..(or a GZ7112)..& i can replace the Intel video driver with the ATI one..& i can replace Nortons with the McAfee..everything else is basically the same..(even up to the Gateway One Logo wallpaper)..so Sachs, (smile)..i'm going to see this thru..i think that Logic may be on to something..we'll see what happens..& i'd like to thank both of y'all for giving me such good insight..& advice..Peace..& God bless..

As you have got 'back in', once you have saved as much as you can- try rolling back the partitions- I have done it with Partition Wizard, and as I said, I actually got lucky and had the factory image, and the original set up!. At the time, I was pretty gobsmacked, as I did it for experimental purposes. You can see from this how possible it is for a real hacker to uncover untold data.
    Lots of patience can help.
Otherwise,if you get to a stage that you can actually see the recovery partition , you can change its number (I think it was 07) to the boot code, to force a boot.

The other tool, if you need to start from a cd/dvd ptedit.zip, or PTEDIT.32.ZIP CAN DO THE SAME WITH CHANGING PARTITION TO 07 TO FORCE A BOOT AND RECOVERY
    ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/tools/pq/utilities/

NOTE THAT YOU MIGHT FIND IT EASIER TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION TO
To view this FTP site in Windows Explorer, click Page, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer.

If you cannot get there using As I have not used ptedit for some time, and have not got a laptop handy to go through it with, I looked up my archive, and found this note I kept.
How to use it, if you have an floppy drive- I would think it possible to do the same with a cd, but make it bootable (Ialways keep an external floppy drive, as I find themstill very useful
    First, download PTEDIT.zip from ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/tools/pq/utilities/ptedit.zip
Save the file ptedit.zip to your desktop.
Next, you need to create a bootable disk.
Place a floppy disk in your disk drive.
Double-click My Computer and right-click on Drive A. Click Format.
Check the box labeled Create an MS-DOS Startup Disk and press Start.
Click OK on the confirmation screen to proceed.
Click OK again when the formatting process completes.
Now copy PTEDIT to the floppy disk
Double-click the ZIP file you downloaded earlier.
Locate the ptedit.exe file and right-click it. Click Copy.
Next, open My Computer and double-click Drive A.
Click on the Edit button ( near the top of the window) and click Paste.
Now you can insert the floppy disk into the computer yo want to work on
Make the computer boot from the floppy drive by configuring your BIOS settings.
You should be presented with the A:> prompt. (If using a cd, it might be E)Type PTEDIT and hit Enter.
The PowerQuest Partition Table Editor screen should now appear.
Look in the first column of the table labeled Type.
*The number here should be 07, which represents an installable file system.
If the value here is anything other than 07, than the drive is unbootable. Here's how to fix it:
Use your tab key to go to the Type box.
Hold down Alt + T to open the Set Type menu.
Select 07 with your keyboard and hit Enter.
If you have another drive already with 07, then change that one to a non bootable (I think that is 00 ) A long time since I used this.
Then Hit Alt + S to save changes.
Press Ctrl + C to exit.
    Windows should now boot normally.
    Good luck:major

Sounds a bit funny, but I wonder if the old gateway recovery procedure way might work with this, if a recovery partition is there
    1. Reboot, and press F11 or the R key to start the recovery process.
    2. Select either "Full System Restore (Destructive)" or "Full System Restore (With Backup)"*.
    3. Click "Next", and then click "Yes" to confirm the recovery process.
4.Wait for the computer to restore itself. When it is done, click "Reboot" to reboot the computer.

to Logic: i'm using DiskGenius right now..& it took a while..but i do see D Recovery..but it's not in partition form..it's in files form..so i really don't know what to look for..i'll keep trying this way..but if i get frustrated..i'll try your PTEdit way..like i was telling Sachs..i think that you're on to something..& i'm a man of my word..if this works..i'll need to PM you so i can send you some loot by PayPal..(if you have a PayPal account)..(laughing)..so i'll be on in a a couple of hours to let you know what happened/happens..again..thanks so much Brother..Peace..& God bless..

All is for the crack on majorgeeks- nice thoughts, but all free.
If you can see the D recovery- you are in with a chance.
Keep us posted - it makes our day if we can get you on the road to recovery.
Just don't delete the D recovery bits.

to Logic: ok..here's what i've done so far..DiskGenius is showing the D recovery files..but not the actual partition..so i really don't know what to do..so i tried PowerData Recovery..but i keep getting a runtime error when it's 85% done..now it sees a lot of stuff..but it's really nothing i can do to get rid of the error..so now..i'm using Easus partition recovery..i started it this morning before work..(it's right now 10am in NYC).(laughing)..so i'll see what's going on when i get home..when i left the house..it had like 10 partitions..but none of them showed anything near the 5bgs for recovery..if this does NOT work..then i'll try the DOS version for the PTedit..Logic..i hate to say it..but Sachs may be right..(laughing)..it can't be done if you've written over it..but we'll see what happens..Peace..& God bless..

A-Weapons..PS: & i tried the PTedit32..but all that it showed was the main driver..& everything else was empty..no nothing..maybe the DOS will see something different..

    O.K
See if you can copy all the D Recovery files. to another hard drive, or, usb stick to save them.
With Partition Wizard, you could roll back partitions, so don.t despaire , yet. I have not used DiscGenius, but I would think it should be similar.
Now you have D recovery showing, after copying them elsewhere as I said, the formatted partitions can be deleted one at a time, restarting each time, and then just go very carefully when choosing the partion to delete, until , and hopefully you get lucky with the original, Also if you get to see D recovery as a partition, then you could try the f11 recovery '
I know that when working within a partition, you can overwrite files, but , again believe me it is incredible, but when you roll back- say the C partition, you can get to the previous formatted partition. It is something not many people seem to know- I certainly did it! You may need that spark of luck . But worth a try, when it costs nothing to experiment.
Tell you what , though, I found Partition Wizard did it fairly easily, especially as it was the first time I tried it.

Worth trying this, too, at any time, or, change of partiton before trying more partition changes.
When the Gateway logo appears on the screen, press the Alt and F10 keys repeatedly.
If prompted with a Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.

To Logic: & to talk about the GZ7220 restore disk?? well?? i actually wrote to them & asked about whether the disk can/will restore my PC back to its factory default..but it keeps saying that my email addy isn't in their database..so its no way to contact them..and though 25 bucks (US) isn't going to break me..i'm not going to give anybody money..(laughing)..i'm going to purchase the power data recovery software if all fails..it had recovered like 10G's of files before getting the runtime error..(i d/l'd a c***k'd version & it doesn't install in your OS..you have to run it from a folder)..i think that's why i was getting that runtime error..so i won't be doing that..i'm just going to buy it..(laughing)..anyhows..i'm going to do the PW way..(it's like 33% done right now)..i don't know what i'll find..but i'm certain something good will happen..again..thanks..Peace..& God bless..

Yes- that is quite possibly the restore partition-So definetly leave that partition intact.
Now if you installed windows on the second large partition (probably E - ) then you should be safe to delete that (as its the last partition on your hard drive)
But first, try changing that 6.5gb to 07, and the present one labled 07 to 00, and reboot- if it boots it could bring up the recovery wizard, and re-install as original.
If that does not work, this time, then delete the other partitiona as I said, starting with the E partition, as long as that does not show as the 6.5 gb partition, or the cvd rom drive.
Resrat each time, and try again to see if it will boot from the recovery partition when labled 07 (bootable) .
Just remember, if you want to try to start from C partion again, during this, then you must check that it is bootable (07) with no other drive labled 07.
Also try the , the alt+f10 , or, f11 at startup each time to see if the wizard can be invoked, after each change.
When you get to just the C partition left, and the D recovery partition, you might get lucky. If not then delete the C partition, and with just the recovery partition, labelled as 07, try just starting up, and see if it invokes it to install originall.
This might seem a bit long winded, but I am trying not to miss anything, because I have not got a laptop spare to go over it again, so its from memory, and as I am seventy next year, the old grey cells get a bit muddied (POIROT SERIES ON TELLY- always refers to thinging as using the grey cells)
It has been done by copying the contents of the D recovery partition to another formatted hard drive, and making it bootable( 07 ) but , unfortunately, I have never tried that- possible.
Still nothing to lose, so keep us posted.
Partition wizard v7 is now available at majorgeeks, looks even simpler to undo a format, but again I have not tried it, yet.
    Good luck

(sighing & shaking my head)..ok Logic..here's where i'm at right now..on the raided GZ7220..i ran the Power Data..i found Recovery..but it's no boots or nothing..just files, cabs, & picutres..(some of the pix i didn't even take..e.g. porn pix)..LOL..but i'd been to the site though..so anyhows..i saved the files..but i don't know what else to do..so i stopped on that PC..& i turned on the PC that has the factory GM5688E installed in it..i ran the data recovery on that one..& like 96 partitions came up..i don't know which one to choose..now 4 boot drives came up as well.one had 128G's..one with the 6G;s..& 2 of them i don't really remember..now the 6.6G one is unallotcated..2 recoveries came up as well.everything is coming up as a RAW file..(not a partition)..i see some things that were 3-4 years old in there..but the recovery that will boot & does exists is showing the GM5688E recovery..not the one i need..right now..i put back the raided one..broke up the raid..ran PW boot disk on the 1st drive..nothing..as i was leaving the house..i ran it on the 2nd drive..so i'll see what's up when i get back home..Logic..(shaking my head)..WE'VE GOT TO CONTACT HIGGINS!! (laughing)..i need him to make a spare backup for me..LOL..(star wars)..he's our only hope!! i MAY just get that disk that you'd mentioned earlier..it wouldn't hurt to try it..who knows?? it may restore it..& Logic..it's ok to be long-winded as long as you have something PRODUCTIVE to say..(laughing)..e.g. i was in TechSupport forum asking the same questions at the GZ7220..& every single Google internet expert replied to my thread..Logic..i can read..LOL..not better than most..but i can read..i don't need internet readers quoting Google scriptures..so i left that forum immediately..word..i need someone who's "been in the trenches"..LOL..not reading off of Google..LOL..DISGUSTING!!..well..let me get back to work..but if you can, Logic..try to contact Higgins for me, please..i don't think this is going to work..i hate say it..but Sachs may be right on this one..Peace..& God bless..

As a tech Sach2 probably leaves me far behind, but with this one, Ihave succeeded myself, so I know it can be done- but you do need a lot of patience, and maybe a little bit of luck in choosing partitions to delete, as you go.
Knowing you are getting a bit frustrated with this, I had another look around, and this site offers a similar disc, that it states you only need the relevent operating system installed, and it will give you a factory installation equivelent- but I cannot vouch for it, as I have not used this sitemyself.
    http://www.do-download.com/search.php?search=GZ7220

But as an afterthought, have you not considered starting in the GM5688E version, and uninstalling all the drivers, then restarting, letting windows install what it can first ?
Uninstalling the processor and amd drivers through Device manager, then when it restarts, see what drivers you need- I would think that might well be an easier (quicker) way to get it running.
Incidently did you try the dos version on the seemingly blank hard drive to see if it shows any partitions ?.

hmm..ok..i'll look into the recovery disks that you'd mentioned previously..& Logic..i'm "frustrated" at myself for being so damned stubborn & stupid..(laughing)..i knew that i didn't have that recovery disk & i knew that i can't find my backup of this PC..LOL..you've been a big help to me..& even though this isn't working yet..i can see that you may be on to something..(smile)..& that you know what you're doing..so it's no trouble at all on my part..believe me..i'm getting a whole lot further than going to TechSupport forum..OH MY F'G GOD!! (laughing)..but back to what you'd mentioned..the PTedit isn't even botting up anymore..(i think that i messed up by allowing 2 07 options..(it's on option 1 and 4)..see?/ i'm STUPID..LOL..so i'm on PW right now..& i'm going thru each disk separately..in DG (diskgenius)..i actually found the partition that HAD my recovery..(it was 10.7G's)..& that was the one..i tried booting from it..but it's giving a data error..(it says that it can't read it)..so i'm back to PW..hopefully..something will happen..i'm off for the w/e..so i'll have PLENTY of time to find out what's going on here..&?? i actually found 2 compatible computer to mines for sale..one's the GZ7112 & the other one is the GZ7108..(i really need the ZX108..that's my clone..video driver & all the apps & other other drivers are exactly the same)..i'll hollar back when the 2nd drive gets thru scanning..again..thanks, Logic..& like i said..i'll look into the disks you'd mentioned..Peace..& God bless..

The more I look at it, the more I think the hard drive is going to have to be replaced.
You can copy the whole hard drive, and partitions to a new one when you get one-
However I tried the method I suggested where you use the hidden/recovery partition to reinstall- If it does not work with the old hard drive- this is what I tried.
Using Partition Wizard I changed the recovery partition to 07 (You must shut down and restart if it asked you to.
Then I deleted the last partition , then I deleted the C partion.
Then I went to create partionin unallocated space.I never allocated a drive letter, as my machine would have given it O , as I have so many(you might find you can choose D)
Then using same partition wizard I formatted the now unallocated partition to efat
Then still usingpartition wizard, I marked the recovery partition active .
    Clicking apply after each change.
I then shut don, and removed the hard drive, and put it into a laptop that I have spare, and it actually went to loading windows, .
However as it was the wrong laptop for that hard drive, it blue screened.
Later this week, I will try it in my daughters laptop, as it was her original, and if it works I will update you.
