Gateway? Help!

    Got a used Gateway running windows98, p3 tower,and small 10gig hd. Trying to upgrade to xp aswell as a bigger hd. I'm installing a compaq windows xp op and all seems well until it comes to "searching for other windows programs"; this is where the system seems to stop running. My question is does Gateway have there own operating system?

    Certainly some manufacturers have tailored versions of Windows operating systems (Dell was one that used to do it) but whether Gateway is one I don't know.

    How long does the system stop for as I know that the upgrade route can sometimes appear to hang but hasn't really - it's just very slow.

    I've installed many os before and never had it search no more than a minute or 2. To answer you question I would say about 5-10mins each time I tried. You think maybe I should wait it out?

    Personally I would wait 20 minutes before starting to swear. :tas:banghead

    That might be the problem. Compaq/HP has their own propriotory system so it might be searching and not finding the hardware it expects to see.
