Gateway ML6720 Sound Drive Woe's

I have a gateway ML6720 laptop. The machine came with vista but I recently decided I wanted to downgrade to XP. I used nlite to create a install image with drivers for my SATA drive and installed. Everything went fine execpt for the normal video, audio, wireless drivers. I downloaded the drivers from Gateway website and everything installed perfect EXECPT for the audio drivers. After doing a bit of googling around it appears this is a common problem when downgrading to XP.

The problem I am having is that after I double click the audio driver it runs its course and asks me to reboot. When I do and the system re-loads I get a error from the driver installer stating that "This driver is not the correct one for the hardware" even though it is the most recent driver. Can anyone offer any assistance?

 

This is a tough one, considering I can't access the Sigmatel site tonight. Your sound chip is a STAC9200 and it looks like all the drivers I found so far, are Vista for that chip. I found a description of a fix using this driver and the MS UAA driver. I have no idea if it will work. Your best bet would be to wait until I can access Sigmatel or if you can, look for the Sigmatel STAC 9200 driver for XP. It may be listed as a 92xx (series)

SO BE SURE TO SET A RESTORE POINT.

Try your sound after installing the Sigmatel driver. If it's a no-go, install the UAA.
