Need Help locating and purchasing a restore(Windows XP Home) & Driver disk for my Gateway mx6025 notebook.

My windows crashed and I installed Win 98se with no problems but do not have any drivers because it originally came with win xp home,I then tried to install Win xp pro (Upgrade) disk using the new or clean install, but it kept telling me it couldn't copy a file then another file etc.etc. So I dont know if there's something in the bios that wont let me upgrade to pro or does it have to be a gateway restore disk.Need help ASAP.Can e-mail me at " .....
Gateway only has drivers for win xp and vista,I'd use 98se if I could find all the drivers, but would prefer win xp.

yeh, as tunered said it has a recovery partition built in. hopefully, when you installed 98, you didn't delete or damage the partition. when you first got your laptop did you ever make a set of recovery disc(s)? if you didn't (or can't get to your system recovery, you might be able to contact gateway and see about replacement disc(s). i had to do that for my g/f's work computer that i was working on (theirs was an h/p though), and i think we paid less than $20 (with s&h).

Full System Restore (Destructive) <-- this is what you want, since you already installed win 98, you probably don't have anything left to save?? anyway, g/l - sos

(Below is copied from gateway site)

Full System Restore (Destructive) Using Gateway System Recovery Windows XP Hard Drive:

(This option completely erases the hard disk and reinstalls factory-shipped files. It also allows the recreation of the recovery partition. Use this option if the hard drive is blank or all other options fail to restore the machine to a satisfactory condition.

Note: All your personal data files and applications will be lost. Be sure that you have your data files backed up before performing this option.

Thanks for the quick reply.I bought this computer at a flea mkt.and it was working fine.I tried to restore the computer using the partition you mentioned but every time I tried it kept asking for the # 1 restore disk.I then went to the gateway site and checked on drivers etc. for this computer,I even fed them the serial # so they could check online with thier utility if I needed any updates. This computer came with only 256mb.of 333mghz pc 2700,I tried to install 768mb. of
pc 2100 266mghz.When I restarted it this is when windows home edition went bad.(I build and repair computers as a hobby and have installed many versions of Windows,so I am familiar with some aspects of the win. install) I tried the restore partition again and same old thing IT WAS BAD.this is why I tried win 98se so I could do a new install of win xp pro with a legitimate copy of windows.
98se installed ok but I had no drivers and couldn't find any for the Mboard etc.
So I tried to do a clean install of pro with three diffrent disk(serial #'s) 1 was a full install disk and 2 were upgrade disk's.Every 1 would come up and say it couldn't copy a file if I told it to skip the file it would do it again on the next file etc.etc.
It's almost as if something in the bios wouldn't allow me to install a new windows OS.I even tried changing hard drives with a almost new HD I had, same story. So I was wondering if only a gateway disk with the OS on it would work or what ,I'm frustrated and need to find some remedy, couldnt find the restore disk for sale at gateway so I don't know what to do now.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again

Remove the memory that you added and reset the BIOS to default settings. Then download and run this, http://www.majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d4226.html. I noticed in your post that you added PC 2100 ram to a system that came with PC 2700. PC 2700 will underclock to 2100 specs, but I don't believe that it works in reverse.

A failing hard drive will also give the symptoms that you described. Determine the hard drive manufacturer and download and run their diagnostic tools.

If the hard drive passes the test, then I would recommend downloading and using this to wipe the hard drive and start fresh, as this 0's the hard drive to an as shipped condition. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Dariks_Boot_and_Nuke_d4596.html.

    Hope this helps! :)

As Novice suggests, harddrive could be iffy. So I suggest, just in case....
Have you tried the recovery partition with only the original memory installed ?
-if you cannot get a Gateway recovery disc.
A possibility is to download partedit32, which will allow you to see into the hidden partition, and you may be able to copy the motherboard drivers from there with a live knoppix cd., or the ubcd., to a usb stick

I have a gatway mx6214 that I am trying to repair for a friend. They tried to recover the computer themself but chose the wrong recovery option in the recovery menu and inserted the "drivers and applications" disc and started recovering the computer, what happened is most of windows xp was erased and now I can't go back to choose a different recovery option. So my question is, does anybody know how to get back to the main recovery option menu ( the menu with the Full System Restore (Destructive)/(backup) choices)?

P.S.- There is no recovery disc, but there is a recovery partition.

    I think this might help

Failing that, you might be able to email tech support and purchase a bootable CD/DVD for the particular notebook.
