My Gateway Laptop crashed this weekend..wouldnt boot into XP at all. I was able to use a Linux Live CD to recover my files I didnt want to lose.

I tried to use the recovery partition on the computer to restore it to factory settings, but it kept asking me for the recovery CD, of which was not in the box when I purchased it new 2 years ago.

Today I installed an off the shelf version of XP Pro. I went to Gateways website and got the drivers for this model. I got the wireless to work, the correct display working.

    The problems
The audio isnt working. The driver from the gateway website for this model sounds like the right one (sigmatel), but when I try to install it, I get a popup message saying it is not the driver for this hardware.

Does anyone have any ideas for me to try?

Also the USB hi-speed is not working, where should I look for that driver?

    THANKS!

Did you install the chipset drivers before the audio?
This is the XP driver from the Gateway site for your PC.
    AMD CPU Chipset Driver 1.3.2.0

Also, did you grab the XP audio driver and not the Vista one?
    The XP audio driver:
    SigmaTel Audio Driver version: 5.10.5082.0

Last, I believe that driver is Hi-Def. If you are updated to SP3, it won't install.
And if that driver doesn't contain the KB888111, again it won't install

If you have updated to SP3 or it still doesn't install, let me know. I have a fix for that.

    I appreciate the help.

I was able to get the audio going again by installing a slightly different version of the driver than the one the gateway website told me to use. (5.10.5185.0 is the one that works, 5.10.5082.0 is the one gateway wanted me to use)

I do have the chipset drivers you suggested, but Ive only installed SP2, not 3 so far.

the usb ports seem to be working correctly now too, in fact everything seems to be working good.

However, the device manager still shows me big yellow ?'s by these two things:
    Mass Storage Controller
Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus

any advice on these, or does that call for a new thread.

    THANKS AGAIN!

I'm not really sure about those two.
The Mass Storage Controller could be several things from flash drive, camera, Media Card Reader, or external HDD.
Are there any more details, in the Properties, for that device?
The Modem Device on the Hi-Def Audio Bus should be this driver: Motorola Modem Driver version: 6.11.11.03
I would set a restore point, just in case I am wrong.

BTW Gateway is notorious for posting the wrong drivers.

The modem driver did in fact solve that issue.

As far as the mass storage controller, the properties doesnt say much (at least I dont think it does) The only thing I havent tried out yet on the computer is the firewire. Could it be that?
