i have a Gateway Notebook that ive had since 2005.
ive been having problems with the light on the screen. it has been flickering, and this morning will only stay on for a few seconds after turning it on before the screen goes black.
with the battery for this Notebook if im using the battery and not the plug there is a light which is not as bright that i can get to stay on, but if i put the plug in for the brighter light it stays on for a few seconds before going black.
would i need to change a light bulb somehow?

you might need a new display or an inverter for the display. what is the model of the gateway? I have a few gateways that I am parting out

on the bottom it says Model- MX6027
i cant get any light to work at all now. when i turn it on the screen will light up for maybe 2 seconds before going black. im online now using an old desk top computer. i was hoping to hook the big monter for the desktop up to the notebook, but it makes a ping noise the same as when new hardware is found, so im guessing i would have to click the bubble thing with the mouse to accept the new hardware right? but with the screen black im not sure where the bubble is :confused
i bought the notebook at Future Shop 2 years ago and it came with a 3 year warrenty, so i should be able to take it in and have them look at at? problem is i dont know all whats on the notebook that i want other people to see. i have some pictures/videos of girls i know in lets say not so much clothing :D ..and i dont really want them guys at Future Shop to see. i was thinking maybe i could take it in and be right there with the guy while he does whatever he does to make sure he isnt going through my files.
since everything works except the light im guessing its just a light issue, but what would they do? is there a bulb somewhere to change? would the whole foldup screen part need to be replaced? i see screws on the back where im guessing the foldup part comes off, but i dont want to mess with it.

i had this problem before, but now have an update and questions.

before when i turned on the laptop the light on the screen didnt stay on for very long before going black. the laptop was still running, there was just no light.
i havnt did anything with it and just had it stored in the closet, until this weekend. i thought i would turn it on and see what happens, and surprisingly it now works. i had it on yesturday for 3 hours, not using it for anything, just having it on. the screen is as good as it was before.
previously before the problem occured and the screen went black the screen would be slightly pinkish and sometimes there would be small flashes that wernt that noticable, but still enough to where i should have known something was going on. now yesturday having it on for 3 hours there was no flashing and no pinkish screen. the screen was good the entire time.
    questions..
    is this normal?
if i did nothing to fix the problem last time why is it now working?
should i expect it to continue to work good? or should i expect to have similar problems as before?

before when i used the laptop alot i could have it on from early/mid morning until late at night, not turning it off even if i wasnt using it. i also never had any type of screen saver, eventhough i know i should have. could all that usage have just worn down the light? but possible now it has recharged back to being good?

i now have a new computer and if this old laptop will work i might think of giving it to my cousin, but i wouldnt want to give it away with everything still on it. if i did a system restore which would restore it to original settings, would everything that WAS on it be gone completely? i thought i had read somewhere that even when deleting stuff they are still in the harddrive, or would a system restore remove everything completely?

    No.
Also no answer for this. That's probably why no one has responded.
A backlight going bad doesn't fix itself. So in a few days you may be back to the same problem you had in 2007.
    No.

If you want to totally wipe a hard drive, OS and all files you use something like Darik's Boot and Nuke.
But before you wipe the drive, do you have a CD to install the OS that was on it? If not, then using Darik's is a bad idea.

i did a System Recovery with the CD that came with the laptop. it says on the CD-- "WARNING: The recovery process erases all data and files from the hard drive."

i now only have whatever originally came with the laptop from the factory. i also have a CD with programs i had previously saved that i can load (Firewall, Anti Virus, Firefox, ect).
i saved any information i still wanted onto CD.

i have also experienced the screen flickering. im guessing it will soon go black like it did before, but now with everything that WAS on the laptop no longer there im not worried about sending it away to the computer store to be fixed. its still under warrenty until next spring.
if i do need to send it away, i should have no worries about anyone finding any information i previously had on the laptop??

one thing i noticed. i had the laptop on for about 3 hours. after shutting it down the bottom part of the laptop was really warm. it was around the area on the bottom near where theres an opening for "Memory card reader" and "IEEE 1394 port"
i dont know if that has any meaning or what.
that are of on the opposite side of where the fan is.

i dont know for sure its a light problem. im just guessing that since the screen went black but the laptop was still running then it must be a light problem?
is there anywhere on the laptop i can look to be sure?

If it is still under warranty, send it away and let them determine what the problem is. That's why you have a wrrenty.

i didnt want to send it away before because i had stuff on it that could get me in trouble. when the screen was black i couldnt see to get rid of what i didnt want people to see. now that i was able to see the screen ive done the recovery so all of that is gone.
i dont feel worried now about sending it away because they shouldnt be able to get anything that was previously on there, right?

i did a complete system recovery which put the laptop back to what it had when it was in the store. it would only have whatever it had when i bought it from the store. the only programs i put on from the CD i have is- Zone Alarm, AntiVir, and Firefox.
since doing that ive been able to leave it turned on for a short time period, and now it will stay on for a few minutes before going black.
the laptop has a system restore which will restore the laptop to an earlier date. that says "restore my computer to an earlier time" ..but the only day available is the day i did the system recovery.
im interested in taking it to the store while its under warrently to get them to look at at, but what i want to know is.. since ive did the system recovery putting the laptop back to the original programs, is there a way for some technician to be able to find anything that WAS on it previously? or is not now completely safe to be taken away for someone to look at it?
if its not totally clean and i have to download some additional program to wipe out any hidden programs that remained even after the system recovery then id like to know before i take it and have some technician look at it.
i dont mean to be a pest and take up someones time, i just dont want to take the laptop away and have some technician find what WAS on there before.
am i good to go? or no?
