Gateway P6860fx notebook restore problems

Just replaced a hdd on a gateway 6860fx laptop. I formatted the drive then started the recovery using recovery disc 1. The unit will shot a progress bar and says "Windows is loading files" then will display a Gateway splash screen with an empty dialog box. It's at this point nothing happens. I've retried and retried and get the same results. Ran a hardware diagnostic and everything passed. I reseated the hdd and the memory just to be sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well I was able to obtain a new set of recovery discs from a friend who has the same notebook, and I'm STILL getting the same problem

I have an eMachine which is owned by Acer who also owns Gateway. I'll assume using the recovery disks procedure is similar on a Gateway as on my eMachine but you really need to find the manual or quick start guide to see the proper instructions.
1. Turn on the computer with the restore/recovery DVD in the drive
2. Press alt + F10 as the computer starts up
3. Follow the onscreen instructions. I may have been given a choice of what I wanted to do, just in case I did not want to do a full factory restore.
The up and down arrow keys let you select the option you want.

If you see that, you haven't selected your restore option quick enough in the boot process because there should be no mention of windows which is not installed on the new hard drive.
