This isn't really an issue of hardware, but I was thinking about getting a job at geek squad. I know a decent amount about computers, but I am no expert. Do you have to be to work there, anyone know? I called and you dont have to be A+ certified or anything, what exactly is that, i keep reading about it. Do you have to go to school to get certified?

You only need to know how to tell someone to reinstall their OS, instead of fixing the problem. roflmao

You don't have to take classes for A+, you just have to pass the test. You might want to look at some of the A+ books at a bookstore. Your local VoTech type college may offer classes if you want to take them.

A+ certification doesn't require going to school, but there are TWO tests you must pass to be certified; the first is called the Essentials test which covers, you guessed it, the essentials. PC basics: terminology, OS stuff, hardware stuff, network stuff, a bit of printer stuff. You need a 670 to pass, I got an 820. I didn't study; I just paid online and went in and took the test. If you've been working with XP and hardware more or less daily for year or two it should be no problem. The second test is your choice of one of 3 or 4 different tests depending on what you'll mainly be doing: on site service, phone/helpdesk service, depot/bench service (like in a shop), etc. I haven't taken the 2nd test yet mainly because I haven't had the time to schedule it (there's only certain days/times when you can take the test, in my town anyway). Now, about the Geek Squad... in my area they have a REALLY bad reputation for being useless, unqualified, expensive, useless, taking too long, not fixing the problem, being useless, showing up late, not showing up at all, lying... did I mention useless? But we just might have a bunch of stoned slackers working at the local Best Buy.....

Probably good to have an understanding of how to remove malware, fix minor Windows issues (probably some Mac experience would not hurt either), and know something about hardware installation-to include drivers etc. If you like it as a hobby then maybe you could try placing an ad in the paper and doing it on the side for awhile and see how it works out. Probably be more enjoyable for you that way and you can set your pricing (after researching prices in your area). I am sure most calls would be for malware problems or simple solutions to configurations, etc. with the occasional hardware replacement needed.

roflmao, Geek Squad won't hire me. I've applied twice in the past, during periods of desperation. They don't even return my calls :D Never saw a test, due to never being interviewed. I guess it has to do with me being an aggressive customer to the techs.

I am so glad I am getting out of the IT field.

*jaw drops to floor* Think it might be because you actually can fix a computer! They don't want to ruin their rep. LMBO
