Geek Tragedy...............

........which turned to triumph.

Long time no participate etc. Been a hectic couple of months but I thought this little story might amuse a few of you.

I was just sitting here surfing MG the friday before last, glass of Chablis in hand when I suddenly realised it was time to upgrade the machine.

Within five minutes I'd decided to go 64 Bit and ordered an Athlon 64 3000+ PIB from the Net, (great price). Ran around the next day and got new case, PSU, RAM and Vid card.

The CPU arrived last Wednesday, dropped it in, no POST, 4 hours of testing later and there's no doubt the CPU is D. O. A.
Aaaaaaargh, arranged for it to be collected and refunded and ran to my usual supplier for a replacement CPU and why not, a new HD. Got back, dropped in CPU, it POSTs, yeees result, hang on though. After 30 minutes it's clear the new HD is also D.O.A.
By this stage I'm getting a little irritated. Back to supplier, swap HD, go home and build. This time it POSTS and picks up my devices. Will it Boot? Will it b******s!!!
Either the Floppy controller or the cable are juiced, cannot fdisk according to carefully laid out plan.

Who cares? Thats what Partition Magic 8.00 is for. Get everything set up including fancy new keyboard, pour a glass of Chablis, put XP Pro CD in and start up. Everything is going great until I hit a snag............the bloody F8 key on my fancy new keyboard doesn't work, now I am irritated! Get my old keyboard and I'm away. Set up XP no probs, put new keyboard back and settle down to surf. As I'm looking at the new k/board I cannot believe my eyes, a double take, I look back and yes it's true..................................there are two Y keys. I'm sat there looking and subvocalising in my head Y....Y, at which point ROTFLMAO.

Anyhoo, alls well that ends well. Everything's up & running on these specs.

I've been a fan of Mandrake up to now but having d/l'd 64 bit Fedora Core 3 I'm a convert. Absolutely easy to install, very very fast, feels rock solid and looks beautiful. I enclose a screen shot for your delectation

glad you're up and running but your supplier sounds fishy ..

 

The CPU I got from the Net, s**t happens, after talking to Technical and going through stuff they agreed it had to be the CPU and refunded my card straight away even before they'd picked up the return. I'll probably give them another go at some point for that kind of service.

My main supplier laughed when I told him I'd done it that way to save £6.00, we both laughed, me in a more wry way than him

Anyhoo he discounted me 40% on my RAM for the mither of having to take the HD back and suffer the torture of thier returns Dept, forgot to mention in specs 2 x 512Mb DDR 400 RAM.

A comedy of errors but all worked out in the end. Love these 64 bit CPU's

 

did you ask him where the keyboard with 2 Y's came from? lol

heheh.. well, if your keyboard was all Y's , then it would really confuse your friends who try to use it

Number 1 son here over the holidays, will get him to photo it, and I will post it.

 

we'll never know, if it's true or not,........for the last year and a half, I've been taking apart computer's and stuff, for my mixed media art..........I have done about seven key boards so far, I could "come up with a few Y keys, I think............wobbles

 

What happens when you push the keys?

 

The usual Y key produces Y and the other Y key produces a U just as it should.
