    Greetings.

Yesterday someone said on a post he didn’t know what a mobo was. I recently found out what PM meant, but it took me a day to find out (I live in Oz – had to wait for daytime in US). I also recently discovered the difference in meaning (in computer-speak) between memory and storage. I have also had lots of queries about other abbreviations and other stuff. What is a GPU fan for?
Today I found the Geektionary, but I had to go looking for it. Found the answer to my GPU question there.

    Suggestions:
    1. Make the Geektionary more obvious and more easily accessible – one click away from wherever you are. It would be much easier to read posts if one didn't have to stop from time to time to discover what something means, or go on without knowing.
    2. Add as much to the Geektionary as possible. Motherboard appears there, but not mainboard, MB or mobo (maybe it could be turned into a Wiki).
    3. Here’s a challenge (I think), make words that are in the Geektionary stand out whenever they appear in posts. Then make them links to the Geektionary – click and go.

There's a lot of esoteric language used in teh computer world, and it's easy to get lost if you're not familiar with it. I don't think the solution is to spell everything out, as that would be a waste of time for those who do know the meaning of things. But a helper for those who don't would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    GC

    Re: Geektionary update?

Certainly a comprehensive list. However, if I may critique it a bit, it suffers from being written in language that only those experienced in computers would understand. Maybe that's unavoidable, but maybe not.
    Example:

    Portable Network Graphics (PNG)

PNG is an image format that uses lossless compression, similar to the GIF format. How the PNG format differs, however, is that the GIF format involves licensing the LZH compression standard from Unisys, whereas PNG is a public domain format that was designed to replace GIFs. Support for PNG is currently included in the current versions of almost all modern browsers.

Also, some of the definitions don't actually tell you what the meaning is, at least, I don't think they do. Example:

    Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)

This interface was designed to supplant the VL-Bus architecture and provide a standard slot with a reduced size for high-speed peripherals. It normally runs at 33MHz on a 32-bit bus in a PC, but the specification allows for 64-bit and 66MHz operation that provides up to 532 MB of data transfer per second.

Also, it doesn't appear to be in alphabetical order.

A nice, plain English glossary/dictionary written for laypeople would be more the go, I think.
