geforce 6600 gt 256MB DDR3 problems

i am relativly new to gameing and have recently got a new graphic card,geforce 6600 gt 256MB DDR3, wen i play my games now like half life 2 with in 5-10 mins the game either crashes or the computer restarts itself. sometimes while playing the game there will be loads of gliches in the game like parts of the level missing , things like tht. i really dont know wat to do. any help would really be appreciated cheers.

Is it just Half Life 2 that's causing problems, or is it other games as well?

What driver are you using, is it the one supplied with the card or the latest nVidia one?

 

it happens with all games old and new. i am using the latest drive from nvidia. some one suggested it could be an apg driver or summet for my motherboard and tht he know tht could solve the problem but i dont know lol

 

I would uninstall and then reinstall the nvidia drivers. If that doesn't help I would make sure you've got a Powersupply that can handle the extra juice from the Geforce 6600 GT.

 

i have read about tht but i dont know how to find out wat power supply is going to the card and how much is needed

If you take out the powersupply, there is a sticker that tells you the wattage. The requirements for the graphics card should be in the manual that came with it. Here is a calculator to see if your comp is sucking to much juice from the powersupply.



If power isn't the problem, it could be overheating. My Geforce 6600 creates a lot of heat and has made me install new fans and stuff to improve cooling.

 

cheers...... i have a setting thing with the card tht tells me its temp on my screen it usually stays about 50-55 no higher.

 

(When you installed the card, was there a power molex plug that you hooked up?)


Try updating your motherboard drivers.

If you don't know your hardware's details, use EVEREST.

If you are still unsure, post the log here as an attachment and someone will look at it for you. (don't copy and paste the log, only attach it)

 

there was a plug tht need a connection for the fan done tht and fan works fine

 

No, not the fan.

If it was an AGP card, there should be a plug from the power supply to the card.

It's a white molex plug, same as the ones that supply power to the hard drive and CD drive.

 

yeah, make sure you have the extra power cord plugged in if it has a connetor, I don't think power is the problem, i am using a 300w bestec psu and it runs my 6600gt just fine.

 

ye it is an agp card... on tht everest thing wat do i look under to find the power supply... and wat do i need to know on the mother board details to upgrade it

Did you check the power supply lead to the card?

 

i think ive found the problem..... the card needs a minimum of 350w (ithink)
my comp only supplys a maximum supply of 127w

im sorry but its a bit hard doin all the things u say cos its not my computer...im 15..its my parents and there already annoyed with me for gettin this card wen they said not to ...... they dont understand much about comps and they think i will break it

If there isn't, that is your problem and no use looking elsewhere.

Then it may well be the power supply not being powerful enough, as suggested earlier.

 

is this an older computer? how old is it? Knowing how parents are, they probably bought a cheap computer that has a bare minimum PSU, Celeron processor, etc. (my mom actually believed that a Geforce 2MX 200 would last the lifetime of the computer).

I'm just gonna jump to the conclusion you need a bigger powersupply.

Just for kicks, what is the processor, RAM, old Graphics card?

 

intel pentium 4 processor cpu 3.20GHz
ram 1024MB
origional card was an ati radeon 9200se.. i think
then i bought a radeon 9550 summet like tht
computer is about 2 years old

started to play a lot of games on pc recently (cant be bothered with playstations ect) so ive added t the comp over a few months but this is first problem ive had lol

 

In terms of power supply, a 6600GT is much more demanding compared to a 9200 or 9550.

Power supply would be the first thing I'd look at.


The rest of your specs are pretty good. If you can get this card sorted out, it would be a good addition.
