GeForce 6800 GT opinions please

The price is kinda steep ($400) but there's an offer at comp U.S.A. for $400 and Doom 3 is thrown in. My 2½ year old P.C. needs a new video card to stretch out it's life span for several months until I build a new one. http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/pny_verto_6800gt/page2.asp

 

Also, will Doom run decently with the 6800 and the attatched system? I currently have a Nvidia Ti4200.

it depends on what your definition of "decently" is. But i can tell you right now that with the average settings, you should do just fine. just don't look for super high settings and detail at 60fps all the way through the game

 

Thanks Strogg, so you think there would be a decent improvement in other games even with my (relatively) weak system? Also, will this card carry over nicely when 64 bit/ PCI express is more available/ affordable?

 

Oh yeah, it will definitely power it up some, no doubt about it. Although for the pci-e, this card isn't compatible with it. you'll need to buy another card that has a pci-e connector instead of the agp connector if/when you decide to buy a pci-e mobo. and iirc, there are no such things as agp8x / pci-ex16 motherboards.

 

Thanks Strogg, I guess that's too much $ to spend for an upgrade if it won't work at all for PCI express. I'll just stick with the TI 4200. I appreciate the help.
