    OK.
    I have a Gateway 700GR...kinda old, but that's what I got.
I had an ATI Radeon 128MB card in there for awhile, but it quit working...may have had something to do with my kid playing that goddamn WoW game on it. Anyway, I just bought a 1GB Georce 8600Gt card to put in there. I plugged the thing in, and got no video signal thru vga or s-vid. I unplugged it and made sure it was seated, cleaned out the gunk, etc.
    Tried again to no avail.
I am not a techno-guy, so I am not sure where to go from here. Could the PCI-E slot have been compromised when the last card failed?

    Any insight would be appreciated.

Hello & welcome to Major Geeks :)

Firstly have you tryed plugging in a moniter into the VGA/DVI port on the card?

Secondly are there any PCI-E power connectors on the card itself 6/8 PIN?

What is the make of the card? GIGABYTE, XFX, Sparkle (please no) LOL

A dead PCI-E port is possible, if the last card surged or the PCI-E slot could have been the problem in the first place :confused

First things first lets see if it could be the card in any way :-D

Yes, I tried vga and s-vid to no avail.

I don't notice any. There is a little 2 pin connector, but I don't know what it is for...

Geez...how did I know you were going to ask that? I went 'round and 'round with the guy I got it from on Ebay via email today. He didn't know anything...literally.All the box says is "Made in China". I attached a couple phone pics of the box and card itself if that will help. I also asked Nvidia themselves, and they were confused why anyone would put 1GB on a 8600 series card. They said with 128 bits, it was "like putting race tires on a Camry." I am not sure what they meant by that, but I'm sure they weren't making fun of me so I let it slide.

I live in a small town and the local computer guy (we only have one) said that was the problem. I personally believe the guy is a little shady, so I took it upon myself to do a little research.

I even got rid of all the drivers from the last card, thinking that they would clash, but that didn't work either. The fan on the card runs when plugged in, so I know there is power. I am at a loss...

That 2 PIN connector will be a SP DIF I can't remember how it's spelled :-D, I belive it's for fan control.

Yes 1GB in an 8600GT is a bit pointless LOL, thats strange indeed having no brand name. I am at a loss with that unfortunately, I don't even recognise the pciture. Is there any documentation included that may give a clue? Maybe a serial number you can put into Google & see what comes up :confused

It looks like a very old model of 8600GT but I have no idea who makes it :confused

Edit: The comapny bothered me, so I google'd "8600GT 1GB", I think I have found the company :), the company is called "Made in China" LOL belive it or not. I took a quick look on their website and I found a couple of 8600GT 1GB ver, not your but similarly... old ones: http://www.made-in-china.com/produc...0GT+1GB&comProvince=nolimit&code=JPEuQQnrymJx

I suggest you E-mail them the serial number & find out all you can about it.

I have accepted that fact that you get what you pay for, and in the realm of graphics cards, Ebay is most likely not the best place to shop. It was only 60 bucks, so I am inclined to slap it in my kid's machine and tell him white lies about how it's the best card ever...knowing that he could never tell the difference:)
If it doesn't work there, I will know it's the card itself. Unfortunately, I have already left positive feedback for the guy, so I will have to chalk it up as a loss if that turns out to be the case.
So on to the next question while I have you here...

Can I PM you with a system-specific build sheet for your insight?

The logic behind installing this card is so I could pass this computer off to my other kid as she is heading off to college and needs a quicker machine. That gives Daddy an excuse to upgrade!

I am not-so-educated when it comes to builds, but wanted to do it...just so I said I did.

Thanks again for your help in the video card issue, but I will call that a dead issue and not buy anything without the benefit of research again.
If you are inclined to give a novice some tutelage on a build, I would appreciate it.

TBF it was never the best card out there LOL

I thought feedback was useless on eBay, if you leve bad feedback they return it :confused

You can PM me anytime you wish.. one you have 50 posts to your name :-D
I don't make the rules :confused, but feel free to post your questions/needs up here in the hardware section & if I am about i'll reply for sure :)

I love building systems, I have built 7 or 8 systems for myself & friends :), all happy customers. All you need to remember when spec'ing out a new system is the budget is very important, that & compatability LOL

So when the time comes post up your budget & requirements :)

That box looks a lot like the video card boxes I saw in Vietnam.
Another thing that would be useful to know is where do you live?
If you live in Canada, there's an online store called NCIX that does pricematching and has these sales every week. My friend got an EVGA 8600GTS for only 30 bucks (after an MIR of course) a few months back.
