GeForce 9800GTX SLi compatible

I currently run a EVGA 9800GTX KO 512MB Sli card that came overclocked by the mfg.

I want to add a second Sli card. Question is, as long as the new card is a geforce 9800GTX type card will it work? I read on web that some say it has to be the exact same card. Ideally I would like to do that, but this particular card is no longer available.

Is compatibility based on the type & clock speed of the GPU & on board memory? Will different mfg cards be okay as long as it's a 9800GTX card?

no they dont have to be the same card.
if u have a evga one and a xfx one, they will work together, but they will both clock to card with the lowest clock speed.
so yes you can put two diffrent cards together, but, the same is allways better. same clock speeds, same mfg. if something goes wrong.

I would stick to the same amount of memory too ie, 1 gb.

 

Whenever you use SLI, the cards determine their performance specs and drop them to the lowest common denominator. I.E. a card with 1GB of RAM in SLI with a card with 512MB will drop it's usable RAM to 512MB.

 

I assume that goes for the clock speed as well? My card was over clocked at 738MHz.

Would I be better off replacing card with something newer vs another card running SLi? This is a gaming machine btw.

 

SlI only gives a slight performace increase, something like 20%.

So yes, i would recommend buying a higher grade card than buying another 9800.
