Over the last weeks I’ve had a problem where the TV Out either outputs Black and White to the screen and doesn’t output anything at all using the “Clone” setting in the GeForce FX tab in the Display Properties settings of Windows XP.
<>When I try to change the settings and “reset” to “Clone”, the Black and White flickers up on the TV Screen and then hitting Yes to accept the new changes, the screen returns to black. The dropdown box to chose Single, Clone, Dual etc then only contains “Single” and TV or Analog cannot be chosen. If I close down the Display Properties and return to above screen, then I cannot even access the settings to change to Single, Clone, Dual etc, as if the card cannot recognise the TV Out Cable in the back. I have tried the cable I was using with another Geforce FX 5200 Ultra on another computer and it worked fine, thus ruling out a faulty cable. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers for the card. I have tried turning off the computer plugging in and out the S-Video out adapter and then restarting.

<>This problem has been spontaneous, where it seems to output to the TV (alas a far less quality then it should) one day and then the next not at all. At present, it does the Black and White problem above constantly and seems to have finally “died”. <>

The video card itself seems to be working fine.

Would anyone have any clues? Likely case of faulty card?

    Thanks!

    Matt

    Hi,

I almost have the same problem as yours. I have GFX 5200 and been using it to watch my DVD movies on TV. Before I can boot with just the TV connected, no black & white thingies. I can even play games with just the TV. I can also use both my MOnitor & TV at once without a glitch. But one day it started to piss me off, When i use CLONE settings it displays desktop on the TV, but when i choose YES to keep the SETTINGS the TV just turns back to black. I am using a S-VIDEO to Composite adapter. Before when i start to boot with the TV and MONITOR on i can see both displays from the BIOS to WINDOWS. But now i can only see the TV display when in windows and changing the DISPLAY SETTINGS. I tried the WINDOWS XP option in the DISPLAY PROPERTIES though to "EXTEND MY DESKTOP TO THIS MONITOR" option and it did display my wallpaper but not the toolbar and the desktop icons. But i can drag windows to the TV display though. I can even watch DVD FULLSCREEN on TV with controls on the monitor, but only when Im using POWERDVD player, with other players when i try to maximize the window in the TV it goes back to the MONITOR and TV only displays the WALLPAPER. Thinking that S-VIDEO adapter is crap, I tried using a real S-VIDEO cable. It did work from BIOS to WINDOWS, the only problem was its in BLACK & WHITE. I tried to change the TV settings on the display properties to NTSC and turned back to colored. THe only problem is that i cannot change the resolution of the TV to 640xblah blah... it always follows the settings of my monitor which is 1024x768. I used to set my TV to 640xblah blah... because as far as i know TV are meant for this resolution. I even reread my VIDEO manuals and even go to their website to check if there anyone who has the same case but none yet, except you of couse. :) Im sure that i can set the resolution of the two monitors differently because i have tried it before. I can still watch DVD on my but only with POWERDVD of course, Not really much of a problem to me. But if its used to be not that way, then its just bugging me that there must be some problem on the VIDEO CARD maybe. Im not really sure where is the problem right now, i tried emailing INNO3d Support for this but there's no reply yet, so im waiting if they would...

If there's anyone out there who has same problem as ours please share it so that maybe we can resolve this and end up with a conclusion to this problem...

    thnx man

    Re: Geforce FX5200 Ultra Tv-Out B&W problems

MyScenario: RE S-Video out to TV Black and White only- same exact issue on 3 different Nvidia videocards: Hercules 64MB, MSI 128 MB & BFG 256 MB in two diferent PCs - all were doing the same thing : outputting Black and frikkin' White display to TV
    - Had Nvidia display options set to clone to TV with TV as primary output for the PC DVD drive (settings that I tried for TV output type made no difference at all)

    Hardware used contributing to problem:
1 S-VIDEO to RCA jack adapter dongle(came with MSI vid card) +
One 12ft (3.6M) RCA cable (dual male connector) +
1 Akai midrange TV with Composite input

This one is tricky because when I rolled back my Nvidia card drivers 2 versions on the old PC with the 128 MSI card the color on TV came up fine ??(but not great)

I just built a new PC with 7800GT 256MB card in it and got same issue
so man, was I was not impressed!

It gets color output up to XP Pro screen then....... just useless B&W output again after the nvidia drivers kick in

When I uninstalled the video drivers then color came back up all the way on TV after reboot but no S-Video options were installed to allow DVD to TV output = <

    Grrrrrrrrrrrr.....

Three different major PC stores staff and many hours surfing the internet were informative but useless
(no, I do NOT want to start soldering wires on my connectors thanks)

    THE FIX! :
I played a good hunch and went to The Source/Circuit City which seems to be the only place I could find a direct S-VIDEO to Composite connector cable 12ft (3.6M)
BRAND NAME :Evolution II Platinum S-Video to Composite shielded cable (approx $30 US )

I went home and unplugged the S-Video to RCA jack adapter dongle and the crappy RCA cable ($5 -thus my nickname)

I then plugged the S-Video connector direct to the 7800GT card connector and RCA jack straight into the TV composite plug

Result: OMFG!!! BEA-UTI-FUL crisp quality DVD picture on TV instantly with no settings adjustments and no worries

    Conclusion:
It was 99% cheap crappy noisy cable + adapter dongle(?) and 1% Nvidia settings

    Possible cause :
pushing S-Video bandwidth through a cheap 12ft RCA cable to a Composite connector is like shoving a watermelon through a garden hose - it just wasn't meant to happen

If anyone reads this and has run out of ideas like me, try it and if it doesn't work (most cases it will) then just go back to store for a refund or exchange on the cost of the high end cable - no risk

    - Good Luck and Good Movies everyone
