    1. Laptop graphics chips are generally not interchangeable, as they are soldered on and may have an interface that is not compatible with any other chip type.

    2. The 7900 is better than the 6800, so if it works at all, which is doubtful, you will get worse performance.

The 7900 is a newer card and will preform faster and use less power compared to a 6800.

As collinsl said laptop GPUs are normaly built in and cant be replaced. Though the inspiron E1705 does support GPU swapping why would you swap to a slower more power hungry card?

Bear in mind also that the actual graphics card, with the RAM and other components may be built into the motherboard, and as such the chip swapout would not work as the graphics card hardware may not be compatible with the new chip.

    good question thanks,
I have a Inspiron 9300 with GeForce Go 6800 and 1900/1200 LCD and I like to buy E1705 with bad 7900 or 7800 card, the reason to pair up with another E1705 and have them both in sync or at list swap HDD in case one takes a dump
In your opinion dose this make sense?

Sorry for asking but I'm not changing the chip just the card.

The laptop architecture is built to accept one type of graphics card, so even if you could remove the old card, which is unlikely in laptops, it may not work at all, and may even fry the laptop completely.
