    hey there!
Got this card and i'm seriously pissed with it.

How come it's not supported by Thief 3? I mean, they say it's not supported for crying out loud! And it's 128MB RAM!

They say the card can't do pixel shading, so,that's why my Bloodrayne Aura Vision was so crappy, right?

Okay besides my frettin' here, my question is, how screwed am i with this card?
Obviously i'm not going to be able to play Half-life 2 and its likes but surely i can play the current games like Far Cry and Painkiller, right?

Is the a way to gauge my card's performance so i can know which games i can't play so i won't have to waste dough like i did with thief?

nvidia's website has nothing on this card on their website, it's like it was never there. why could do this be?

thanks for your feedbacks in advance.

Sorry to say it, but the Geforce 4 MX 400/440 is pretty much the lowest-end card in production. It is basically a Geforce 2 card with more RAM. As far as playing Far Cry and Painkiller, probably not. It might run them at the lowest resolution with all the settings off at a decent frame rate, but I'm not sure.

If you want to compare it to other cards on the market today, read this article from Tom's Hardware:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/index.html

And remember, the games like Unreal Tournament 2003 and Battlefield 1942 are one generation behind Far Cry, Painkiller, and Half-Life 2 so they won't perform as well as UT2003. The Halo benchmark should give you the closest comparison as to how well the card will do on those games.

Nevermind, the Geforce 4 MX cards can't run Halo... Sorry. :(

eh, i'm running Halo on a Geforce 4 MX 440. granted its not as pretty as i'd like it to be, but unfortunitly i'm not doin so well on the money factor so i cant upgrade :p school and car (need new one, and need insurance) and girlfriend (absolutly wonderful woman btw), taking up the budget. i'm going to look around after school starts up for a technology grant that might allow me to build a new computer. mebbie... my grades aren't that good and i want to build a dual opteron setup, but i dont know if BGSU has any ways i'd be able to do it and somehow have the gov't pay for it (the minimum i'd end up spending would prolly be $2500, preffered over $4500 budget, plus i'd like to be able to keep the computer after i finish up with the schooling.

Sorry Haplo, you are another unfortunate casualty to the Nvidia name game. I know that is sucks, well, a lot, but to even play the games out right now with any of the eye candy on at a playable rate, your gonna have to buy a new card.

I have learned this lesson the hardway many times:

Don't buy any computer component without thorough research.

sorry for the loss man :( It's happened to me before

He's not talking about the GF4 MX 400/440. He's talking about the GF MX 4000 (note that it's "GeForce" not "GeForce4" and it's "4000" not "400"). It's a different card, although it's not certain if they've simply renamed the stuff or not. Some graphics card producers have been calling it the GeForce4 MX 4000, but that's not right. Not that that's anything new. I just noticed PNY sells two categories of RAM: "SDRAM" and "DDR RAM". Nevermind that DDR RAM *is* SDRAM...

    From what I've seen:
Most popular low end: GeForce FX 5200
Most popular midrange: ATI 9600 [Pro]
Most popular high end: ATI 9800 Pro 256-bit 256 MB
Most popular top end: ATI X800 /w 390hp, dual overhead cam, fuel injection, turbocharged, dice-on-the-mirror

they just changed the naming conventions because the names got to long to verbally speak. "Radeon 9800" is much easier to say and remember than "Geforce4 Ti 4600"

Yea I've been going thru this same thing with my card. I can play Painkiller just fine @ 1024x768, but Far Cry is a no go at any resolution. It's kinda wierd actually. I can see the UI in Far Cry, but no video whatsoever.

I think both companies ( ATI & Nvidia ) have been backpeddeling with older chips tryin' to get the PCI bus thingy all worked out. Let's just name it something different & get rid of them as new cards, while we work on new stuff. Hence the whole XT thingy.

I too am sorry you were caught up in the name game man. Use this as a learning experience though. Not all cards are built the same. Even the same chipset from different manufactuers aren't exactly the same card. Not to mention the same quality.

The GeForce 4000 is just an Over clock of the Geforce 4mx cards. Thats were I can see alot of companies getting confused with the MX in the name. Cause all the core is an overclocked mx 400 With a tiny bit faster ram. Just like te geforce 4 mx series was and over clock of the geforce2 mx cards :)!
