For budding / serious geneaologists, check this out.

    Quotes:

    RNAME Project
Trace the roots of your surname.

Find out whether you originated from the same ancestors as others around the world who share your last name. Instantly add entire branches to your family tree.

    Discover your deep ancestral origins.

Find out where your ancestors came from, their ethnic background, and how they have scattered throughout the world today

Enhance your research with Genebase tools.

Search for long-lost family lines and generate professional reports.

I haven't tried it. I just list it for your consideration. Bazza

PS: If you take up any of their offers, let us know the results. It could be interesting. Baz

I saw this on the news the other day. Would be interesting. I wonder how accurate it is.

While I like this subject and know a little bit about my families history you may find that $119 to find out this info is not what many folk will wish to do unless very serious about tracing their family tree.

Would though be as you say interesting to know if anyone took this offer up and what they got back in a family history report.

I did small bits and still have a ways to go with my family history, which in parts is colourful! but I using a low tech free approach of asking family members and searchinf gov records and then entering them in an app I blogged about here not a fully finished app but works well for me in a graphical pleasing way.

Apparently on my ex's side, they include a USA President (Rutherford B. Hayes) in the family tree. One family member has apparently a family tree with thousands of members with the same surname.

In her family, Hayes has been passsed down as first or second name. Indeed Hayes is my #2 son's middle name.

Apparently African Americans have had some interesting results with DNA type Geneaology, tracing back to tribes in Africa, etc. Bazza

I saw a segment on Daily Planet(Canadian daily science show on Discovery) once where a team traced all human matriarchal DNA to seven women, if I remember correctly, again in Africa. I'll try to find a link to that, very interesting indeed, to say the least.

I know my grandmother on my mom's side did a whole family history back like 15 or 20 generations when she was alive. I have to check with my momand find out where that's at. I know that my great great great uncle was Bat Masterson, Wild West Marshall and gunslinger :)

Seeing as how my Dad's side is 100% Italian, I think I'll let that one rest :)

There are 50 countries in Africa and it is a huge continent, so tracing to Africa is not simple as in a lot of cases there are few, if any, written recording of BMD's. So DNA is usually the only way to go. Bazza
