General Application Analysis

Hi all,

First official post here...:confused

I am trying to find out how to do end-to-end application analysis. OK, that's vague, so allow me to elaborate. I am a database admin responsible for supporting an application written by a third-party company.

Application specifics: SQL Server 2000 backend, C#.NET front-end, Crystal Reports XI embedded section for reports, 500+ users.

Lately I have noticed that there are certain things that need to be addressed (indexes on tables, queries running for reports, and how the application itself communicates between the server and the user). What I am looking for is someone who's got some idea of where to start. I am currently going through the Wireshark University courses so that I have a better understanding of the TCP data, and I've read an interesting book on reviewing SQL execution plans to give me a better idea of what to look for. So, I know the issues, I know the application, I just don't know how to put it together, or how to interpret anything that I'm finding...

I really don't know what other information I can post. If you are able to help me out, feel free to ask any questions and I'll answer them the best I can (I have to be careful what information I can divulge...).

Hi all...Unless I am going completely blind, I do not have an "Edit" option to my original post. I have spoken to a couple of friends and what they're recommending is I look into Performance Tuning for Applications. OK, that makes sense - but my question remains - hunh? Where do I go from here? Any suggestions for where to start my research? I've googled "Performance Tuning for Applications" but everything that comes up looks like it's not relevant to my problem. Appreciate your help!!
