What are your thoughts and opinions on the GDPR?
How will this effect MajorGeeks' European members?

Eventually this will slow down the unfettered advertising and unsolicited marketing push of business entities on unwary individuals but I am sure it will take some time and have to be accepted by the rest of the world. I hope it happens and will wait to see how successful it really will be ;)
BTW I stopped using Facebook years ago because whenever I did a google search, even for something obscure, then Facebook suggested sites always came up with suggestions that could only have been the result of mining/buying google data from my searches. Now I use Duck Duck Go and problem solved but still don't use Facebook ;)

Maybe widespread geoblocking EU is just all bluster as the economic flow on I think would be swift and costly to the blockers .....so maybe it is just an empty threat that won't happen and that is being put forward to muddy the waters and cause confusion and worry.......if it does happen I will be surprised

Hmmmm..........Mind you a second internet for EU that is safe and free from unsolicited ads and never needing to use an Adblocker to stop pages with loud sounds automatically opening late at night and frightening the crap out of you :eek::mad:...........hmmm........yep sign me up as it would have to be better than the free for all system without any ethics that we have now

Not affect us TBH but its a great way to weed out advertising emails though, dont think any company outside EU is bound by this as not had any alerts from Microsoft or Amazon, did Adobe tho.

I got an email from Teamviewer saying their new version is now fully compliant but that is more about selling a triple upgrade methinks.....We have three corporate licenced Teamviewer channels and our company deals mostly with suppliers in Europe so I guess they are trying to cover their arses just in case

Haven't seen any mention of it on American media outlets. They are currently fighting over Net neutrality with little media coverage.

All I've gotten is notices of sites/programs that have updated their privacy policies. One forum I go to had a huge full page and required me to read through 2 different policies and click I accept before I was allowed to get to the forum.

I assume it was to fall into compliance with the EU new GDPR.

How many of us actually understand the situation? Data ownership is being defined and we need to think a LOT about it.
Let's say you are a social media company and Joffa (random example, not to offend) and I are on it. Joffa shoots me some personal info as a friend then I am an ass and he hates me. Joffa tells you to ban me or he will delete his account and all his info. Joffa leaves after deleting his info. But as a company you cannot delete my info which contains Joffa's info?
Is data you send someone still theirs or something new? Certainly if you give away a car you have no rights to it; the new owner can sell it. But what about a phone number in a private email, can that be sold?
We need the basics of data ownership before we can write privacy laws.
