Run a cleaner like CC Cleaner
    Run a Spyware check
    Run a virus check
    Check disk for errors
    Defrag
    In that order.

I also do some physical cleaning and maintainance. Like Cleaning out the keyboard, disk drives, fans and inside the case with canned air.

Also every now and then I check for driver updates etc.

By the time I've done all that a new processor or socket usually comes out and I buy a new computer..... :p

as above but with these additions

Dump all but last Restore Point ( use Disk Cleanup for that )
Do complete Image backup ( Acronis True Image )

Other than the normal weekly ones that have been aired I religously do the following when I retire at night .. I run Spybot/iClean/ ....Power off and pull plug from mains and disconnect BB connecting wire, you never know if a big storm will blow up whilst a sleep, heard of a guy who had his external BB modem fried during storm. Incidentally I have set diskeeper to auto when screensaver kicks in which helps to keep HD's in order then a complete 0 & 0 defrag about every 6 months. Total defluff which includes taking out all fans including heat sink every 5/6 weeks. I dont use a can of air as I'm always a bit concerened if any moisture is present in can. A good soft paint brush and a good set of lungs and a vacuum cleaner nozzle to suck up the dust.

    Acronis True Image then YES.

Restore Point is XP or MEs own inbuilt backup, cleaned either by as I mentioned earlier or by turning it off completly as in this Guide

I must admit I haven't defraged all year so far..........
    Is it THAT important????

Also a friend of mine just got a new comp andshe was told by the "expert" who built it for her that she should defrag once per week........

    Huh??????????

    That can't be right............

Defrag yes *see links below*, but once a week no as that is a little bit of overkill ( however it would depend on how much data is going on/off your pc )

If your file system is NTFS, then it does tend to fragment less than Fat32, all comes down to speed of reading files from HD, if they are split into a few parts then its going to take longer to read, opposed to them being contigious, which is where defragmentation comes in and what software solution you use,

    nice guide

    Thanks Halo
    You have been very helpful...

    And yep it's NTFS....
I shall run it and see how it goes...
Also I read somewhere (possibly in this forum) that defrag runs quicker if you close down all processors except explorer.exe and systray

What are your views of this???

    Cheers

Only thing I do close/shutdown is my antivirus as it would be checking each file being defraged, thus slowing the process down a touch, but other services etc, I dont really bother with closing.... but you can do.

Virus scans, Spyware scans amost everyday, disk cleanup once a couple of weeks, chkdsk and disk defrag- i've set an automatic thrid party tool on the job, it runs daily, keeps the disk defragged. i like it that way, feel it lends that smoothness to file acess, boot, shut down etc, whenever i have not cleaned out the system have felt that wee bit delay in stuff. So am religious with maintenance. Forgot to mention registry cleaner as well.

what would that third party tool be?

Cron has set secheduled scripts to run to keep my machine pristine. If my machine isn't on during those times, I can use Onyx to run them whenever I choose.

I user Preferential Treatment to check my preferences periodically.

I repair permissions about once a week.

I dont get spyware or viruses, so I dont have programs for those installed.

    Myth.

However, if you are using a defragger that says, screws up its job, then you will see problems.

    That goes without saying, though.
