General Protection Fault

My sister is trying to install Kid Pix Studio Deluxe, but gets application error as follows in
Qtinstal caused
General Protection Fault
in module QT16inst.exe, 0002:25da9

She is on a Compaq Presario, with Windows 5.1 (Build 2600) XP SP 2.0034221633, service pack 1

What need we do to enable the installation of the game to continue, and run properly?

Im not familiar with Windows Xp so I couldnt tell her how to find which version of quicktime she is running etc. We are relaying info by phone, she is newbie when it comes to anything computer and I am OK with most instructions but only used to windows98 or prior

Help, my poor little niece is driving us crazy to be able to play her new game....lol

 

Sounds like she is installing an incompatible app.

qt16inst.exe is a 16 bit installer, which is generally not a good idea to use in XP.

If she has Quicktime installed, uninstall and it get the latest version.

Then see if you can do a custom installation of application and skip quicktime installation, if indeed thats where the error is coming from.

 

how old is this game as thats the 16 bit version wheras she really needs the 32 bit version of quicktime with xp

anyway when installing the game does it prompt you to install quicktime if you havent already got it

or does it do this when the game is installed and you try to play it

I do tech support for a software company. Some older titles will not run properly with the newer versions of Quicktime if Quicktime 2.X hasn't been installed first. Quicktime 2.X is able to work simultaneously with the newer versions, so installing it won't break anything. The 16 bit and 32 bit versions do install correctly (usually) on WinXP, so that should be fine. Perhaps if you have her remove any background programs (instructions below), or check for possible spyware installed, especially if she has experienced pop-ups.

Instructions on how to remove all background programs:
1. Close all programs and return to the Windows® desktop.
2. Click Start and select Run.
3. Type MSCONFIG in the Open: field.
4. Click OK. A System Configuration window will open.
5. Click the Startup tab.
6. Record the Startup items that are checked so you can return to this customized configuration after the installation.
7. Deselect all items under the Startup tab.
8. Click Apply.
9. Click OK.
10. Click Yes when prompted to restart the computer.
11. When the computer has restarted, login to Windows® as a user with administrator privileges. If you do not have administrator privileges, contact the system administrator.
12. After logging in to Windows® with administrator privileges, insert the software CD into the CD-ROM drive.

Restoring the Original System Configuration: Windows® XP
1. Close all programs and return to the Windows® desktop.
2. Click Start and select Run.
3. Type MSCONFIG in the Open: field.
4. Click OK. The System Configuration Utility window will open.
5. Click the Startup tab.
6. Refer to the list of items recorded previously, and check the box next to each item on the list.
7. Click Apply.
8. Click OK.
9. Click Yes when prompted to restart the computer. You are now ready to start the software.
