I have quite a few niggling little problems since my PC came back from the store, supposedly fixed. I could wade through a sea of text files, help files, tech sites etc etc to find the little bits of knowledge I need to resolve my problems but I can't be bothered anymore, I'm not going to let this box of bits rule my life anymore. So yet again I humbly ask the collective wisdom of these forums for the essential knolwdege to solve my problems. (I really have had it, I'm sure some people will accuse me of being lazy, but I don't care anymore it's seriously starting to affect my sanity and I'm not just saying that.)

    So anyway:

    Problem 1
This message field can't be clicked in on my new machine, I have had to come to this site on my old machine to be able to post, any ideas why that could be?

    Problem 2
My browser keeps getting hijacked by the url:
    http:\\freecenturyplan.cjb.net
Spybot can't stop it, BHO Demon can't stop it, Spyware Guard can't stop it. In the end I had to manually put in the Restricted SItes list. Whatever is doing it is still on this PC as well. Any ideas on cause and prevention?

    Problem 3
Norton is asking for permissions on:
stld.exe (which in Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (SCP) is called Achd)
    culrliv.exe (called Svhrurd in SCP)
I have no idea what they do. The stld file is sitting on its own in my Application Data folder. culrliv is in my System 32 folder. I have disabled both at Startup in SCP and I can see no obvious effects as a result which has me doubly convinced they are of no benefit to me. Neither are on my old machine either which runs fine without them.
    Anyone know what these are?

That'll do for now. I'm sure my moneypit PC willl present the next set of problems soon enough.

    Cheers
    Thripston

    step 1:

download Avast! antivirus from the antivirus section here at MajorGeeks. also go to http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG and fill out the free antivirus registration here, they will email you a registration code.

    uninstall norton. it sucks.

when norton prompts you to restart, click Later, and install Avast.

avast will schedule a boot-time scan, which will almost certainly catch a few viruses/trojans that Norton is too lazy to care about.

once the boot scan is over, your system will boot, and when you open Avast, you can input the registration code that they will have emailed to you.

    Step 2:

now that you have a working Antivirus;) download Hijack This from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155

run Hijack this and post your Log in the spyware specific section of this board. they we can tell you what else needs to be deleted to get rid of your browser problems.

Already done step 1 before I posted the update, that's how I found out i had a trojan and it's name. I'd figured Norton wasn't doing its job but if I'd had a say in the matter it wouldn't have been installed in the first place. I installed AVG which I've never had (or heard) any complaints about. Zone Alarm now handles my Firewall issues, a damn sight more user friendly too.

Hijackthis installed. Not sure if the offending item is showing up or not as I've used Spybot and Adaware to clear out any obvious ad/spy ware already. I might remove it from the restricted list and reboot to see if it shows up again, maybe I have already solved the problem without knowing it. I'll post the logfile anyway.

    Thanks

Your in the wrong forum, sounds like Spyware. A pretty complete set of instructions to make sure your clean can be found here:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

If it does not work, please come to spyware forum and start a new thread explaining your symptoms and what you have tried and we will get it figured out.

Registry scrub is not for the novice! Registry cleaner seems a little more informative but again, unless you know what should and shouldn't be there, there's not a lot you can do with it. I didn't see anything that I would have siad shouldn't have been there anyway. I have also installed Registry Mechanic, Hijack This and Crap Cleaner and they seem to have dealt with a few issues, with a little research.

I know I'm in the wrong forum where my trojan issues are concerned, I didn't even know I had a trojan when I first posted here. I have started a thread in that forum to tackle those issues and done just about all the things advised by that thread you suggested with varying degrees of succes.

are these things actually preventing you from using the puter as you intended? i have spent hours downloading anti spyware, blocker, antivir, firewalls, cleaners etc. they have mostly all come up with more things I've then spent hours on discovery tours. i have downloaded more things to protect this puter than are actually on it! just a word of caution. aloha Laurie

I hear you there! Spent way too much time over the last couple of days trying to get this PC locked down. Thing is though, once you have a good scurity suite set up and a clean healthy PC under guard you shouldn't need to go through all this crap more than once, as long as everything is regularly updated.

I would say random crashes count as something that prevents me using this PC as I intended though!

Coming here means my discovery tours tend to take me to useful places, though you always get one whingeing pratt who wants to browbeat you for not taking what you are told at face value or thinks you have nothing better to do than wander endlessley trying to source the info you need.

I got some time to kill if you need a browbeating ;) Sounds like your in good shape, especially if you read this thread:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

Its saved a lot of people. Take special note about not using Internet Explorer as well. If you have to use it Merjin, your CWShredder and Hijack This author has released a new free tool that patches some very popular vulnerabilities these scumbags use to exploit your Internet Explorer:

The avatar is one of the ones from this sites archive, I thought it was pretty appropriate.

That thread (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 ) has been followed almost to the letter. It seems to have saved me from several problems on that PC but it's still not working properly.

I would rather stick with IE even though it isn't perfect, I've never really had major problems with it before. I will try the new tool though.

Of the 3 fixes by Bug Off one is already covered with a new MS update, one stops emails displaying and the other 'may' interfere with Windows help. Not so sure I want to allow this one. Spyware Blaster should stop any further CWS trojans anyway and I have CWS shredder on hand too to back it up. I guess it wouldn't hurt to give Opera a look though.
