    Hi,

Yesterday I got a pop up warning stating "Generic Host Process for Win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close". If I click the debug, send error report or don't send buttons the laptop feezes. Also had the warning "svchost.exe application error the instruction at 0x001a16b0 referenced memery at 0x00000000 the memory could not be written. Again if I click anything the laptop freezes.

Since these have appeared when I click on google search results I get redirected to various sites. The laptop wont shut down either I have to hold the on button to switch it off.

I went through the redirect procdure but could not get TDSkiller to run.

I have gone through the read and run procedure but have not been able to get all of the programs to run.

From the uninstall malware list I found Search Assist in my list of programs. SearchAssist (no space between) was in the list wasn't sure if it was the same or not so removed it.

I had to run the portable SuperAntiSpyware it found 12 items in the registry. I removed as instructed. Can I get the log from the portable version?

    Malwarebytes' will not open.

After clicking run for Combofix nothing happens.

RootRepeal and MGtools logs are attached.

    Hope you can help.

    Thanks,

    Bruce.

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif
Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

    • Malware Bytes
    • TDSSKiller
    • Combofix.

    Any luck?

    Kestrel13,

    Thank you for the reply.

Tried Rkill but still not able to run Malwarebytes', TDSSkiller or Combofix. TDSSkiller gets to 80% initialisation then I get an error message saying it has encountered a problem. Rkill did seem to pick up a couple of files I took a note of one "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe" I've lost the other after running Rkill again.

Is it worth trying to run Malwarebytes', TDSSkiller or Combofix in safe mode?

    Thanks,

    Bruce.

Do you have your XP boot CD?

I've got the XP reinstallation CD. Is that of any use or do I need to create a boot CD?

Earlier on ComboFix installed the Recovery Console. We're going to use that now.

Reboot your machine and when the Boot Menu flashes up - select "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"
(you need to be very fast with the arrow key as you only have a couple of seconds before it defaults to the windows XP bootup)

    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h479/MysticalMagpie/2.png?t=1303862286

When you get to the above screen, take note of the number that references your operating system.

If it's '1' like the picture above, type 1 and press Enter

    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h479/MysticalMagpie/3.png?t=1303862308

    Next type FIXMBR

If it ask if you're sure you want to write a new MBR, answer 'Y'

Then type EXIT to reboot the machine.

With that done, please post back and let me know how things are now.

This has made a big difference.

The generic host warning did not appear when starting.
    TDSSkiller now opens.
    Malwarebytes' now opens.
Don't appear to be getting redirects on google.
    The laptop shut down correctly.

I didn't have time to run malwarebytes' and TDSSkiller before work. I assume I still need to run these and post the logs for you to check?

    Thanks,

    Bruce.

Yes please. :) And SUPERantispyware too. Then after all of that please get me fresh logs to review.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    RegLock::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Intel\Wireless\Folders\¬ v*2*]
    "Path"="c:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\config\\systemprofile\\Application Data\\Intel\\Wireless\\"

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Attach the log from Combofix and SUPERantispyware. Update me again on how things are running. Still no redirects?

    Kestrel13,

I ran Spybot Search & Destroy yesterday after I posted the previous logs. It found over 20 items. Hope that hasn't affected the fix you provided.

I've run the fix and logs attached.

Everything seems to be running fine now no redirects or warnings. The only thing on start up is windows tries to install Coral Photo album. I guess the repair process done something to it? If thats the case I'll just uninstall it since I've never used it.

    Thanks,

    Bruce.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
