I got my old computer from work but they took the Hard Drive. I wasn't worried because I had a ton of 250GbDrives at home.
    My Question is.........
Its a Viao PCV-1112 and no Recovery Disks are Available anywhere. Can I....
Use a XP CD a friend bought to restore his PC and use it in my PC with My C.O.A. and be Legal and will it work? This would be a Generic XP Cd purchased legally NOT PC Specific.
Thank You For Your Time :cool

As long as you use the same version of XP as listed on the COA you should be OK. Legally the licence on the sticker is tied to the PC and it is doubtful if the company you got it from ever used it as they would likely have had a volume licence key.

The CD your friend bought will only work with the Product Key that came WITH the CD. It won't work with another Product Key.

I've got an OEM XP Pro CD that came with my computer and I purchased a retail version for refurbished PCs. I cannot use the Product Key from one with the other.

OK So I have one Vote for yes.....
    And one Vote for No.
I guess I'll just have to try it.
I have a Downloaded one in it now just to make sure everything was OK. I will not go online with it or sell it like that. Not worth it.
I wanted to sell it for a couple bucks $75 but for Obvious reasons I didn't want to have to purchase a new XP CD

It is a gray area. The key you have on the machine is for OEM only, not retail. On top of that, it may not work on a retail copy. So its kinda sorta not 'legal' and may not work anyway.

    Like I said, gray area.

You wanted to sell the VAIO? You could sell it with no OS once you've checked the system out to make sure it's working. Blank the hard drive afterward. Since Microsoft support for Windows XP is ending in less than a year, the new owner of the computer may opt for Vista, 7 or 8. I'm going to be purchasing 7 myself pretty soon.

If you can find any place that sells 7, please let me know.
I wanted to install 7 on my XP computer but can't find any disks except OEM.

plodr, I tried contacting you via Private Message to ask what version you wanted — Ultimate, Professional, 32 bit, 64 bit? — but apparently the PM wasn't sent and it doesn't show up in my sent messages folder.

I'm sure I can find any of the above at Amazon or eBay. I've been a member of both for over 10 years.

This is incorrect. The product key is not tied to any particular CD.

This is due to the difference between an OEM and a retail license. With a bit of editing, you can make an OEM CD from a retail disc and vice versa.

As long as the product key is for the version and license on the disc, it will work. As long as the OEM product key is used on the system to which it was originally assigned, carmello2003 can legally use another OEM disc to install the OS.

You can get a W7 .iso from Digital River, but you would need a license key if you don't have one.

Just curious, why would you want a retail box version with "support" when OEM costs far less?

You have all of us for support!!! :)
