    Hello MajorGeeks folks -

Update on continuing problem with my laptop. Tim W offered some help I've tried, but still need help. I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 Pentium 4 CPU, 2.40 GHz, 512 MB RAM with MS Windows XP Pro, Ver 2002, SP2, using paid version of Bitdefender AV. It has operated fine using a Belkin 54g wireless, connecting to Mozilla, IE, and an RDP server. Now when trying to connect to the internet using any method, I get an immediate error message that is identical in each case. The message states:

"firefox.exe / internet explorer / remote desktop connection has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

The prepared technical report to be sent to Microsoft contains this info - Each type of access' info is shown, and the same Exception code are displayed:

Exception Info for Firefox, AppVer: 1.8.20060.7278
Exception Info for IE, AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
Exception Info for mstsc.exe, AppVer: 5.1.2600.2180

    Code: 0xc0000005
    Record: 0x0000000000000000
    Flags: 0x00000000
    Address: 0xffffffffb068a5aa

    STATUS:

    1. Ran all programs I could for malware as recommended by MajorGeeks threads. Nothing found.

    2. Ran Everest - it states "System Memory 512 MB (PC2100 DDR SDRAM)" - no manufacturer listed. Everest also states I have 512 MB Physical memory with 44% utilization, 1247 MB Swap space with 20% utilization, and 1758 MB Virtual Memory with 27% utilization.

    3. Installed and ran MemTest for 2 hrs (5167%) and had zero errors of all unused memory.

    4. Ran Registry Mechanic - found over 800 problems in many areas and repaired about 100. 700 remaining problems in file extensions (6), Shared DLL (25), Add/remove programs (88) [I checked all listed programs - no unusual ones], 8 temp files/shortcuts, and in Deep Scan (574). Ran Registry checks with CCleaner - got rid of most of these problems.

    5. Followed MajorGeeks thread from BlackViper site to disable/manual services for SAFE level.

    6. Programs like Word and Excel open and work fine.

    7. Checked eventvwr.msc (from RUN) - under application there are errors listed for each attempt to use IE, firefox, rdp server. Each one lists the same Fault address as 0xb068a5aa.

    8. Ran chkdsk /f and chkdsk /r c: from CMD screen in normal and SAFE modes - get message "chkdsk cannot run because volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked next time the system restarts?" I elected to, and it stalled out during Stage 4 (datafile check). Got Stop error message *** STOP: 0x00000071 (ox00000000,same,same,same).

    9. Checking this stop error recommends disabling bios memory option (caching/shadowing) - how do I do this???

Laptop starts up OK after this, but still same error problems. Any other recommended actions to try?

    Thanks

    Bob

I checked your URL reference, and only option that seemed applicable was modifying the DEP. I followed links and did the procedure, making Firefox and RDP exceptions to DEP. Rebooted and tried to access - no joy. Got same error message. Here is the code from event veiwer:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Application Error
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1000

    Description:

I would like to try the option noted about disabling bios memory option (caching/shadowing) noted for the STOP ERROR - how do I do that?

    Thanks,

    Bob

You need to access your bios. But, since this is a laptop, then you may be optionless (if that is a word).

Does safemode with networking work for browsing with either IE or FF?

Have you tried a repair install of your laptop?

Not familiar with the original steps of the previous thread. :(

In addition, you can change your boot.ini file to add:

    [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]/NOEXECUTE

The above disabled DEP altogether. :(

    This isn't a solution, but a workaround.

A workaround that needs to be fixed.

I don't use DEP, since my cpu doesn't support it. Computer run fine.

Is there a thread that explains how to access bios and make the cach changes I mention in previous thread? I'm unknowing on the PC vs laptop and ability to access bios, so need some guidance here. Thanks!

Run sfc .....as in start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without qoutes and note the space ...have your xp disk ready to put in drive ....run at least twice.

    Hi Tim and Theefool

Sorry for the delay in responding - been away.Since it's been a while, please see previous entries. Here's latest status.

Firefox nor IE work in Safe mode. Get the same error noted in first post.

I ran SFC and everything checked out OK. Tim, the kbalertz.com link regards problems with IE6, and I can't even fully open Firefox or IE.

I haven't tried a reinstall; but am concerned about other posts on needing drivers since I can't access the internet (original problem). Laptop came with two CDs, but I don't see that XP Pro is on either one.

I keep thinking the "volume in use by another process" message trying to run chkdsk (see point 8 in initial post) is a key. Only new thing that's been done with the laptop is a CD driver installed for a datalogger hardware cable serial/USB transition. I used remove program function to get rid of this software, but wonder if it somehow remains and is a non-functioning driver.

Any way to check this or correct it?

Thanks for continuing help and guidance!
